Author Interview - Andrea Thome
Author I draw inspiration from: Diana Gabaldon—I admire her ability to weave her characters in and out of her books so effortlessly.
Favorite place to read a book: In bed or in my screened in porch.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Claire and Jamie Fraser from Outlander. (Although it would be weird for them to be in an elevator.)
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I think in some ways I’ve always known, but the true desire resurfaced after the death of my mom who was also a writer.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Paperback is my favorite, but I read ebooks and listen to audiobooks as well. (I have the most talented narrator for my series of books—she’s a Yale-trained actress, and I could listen to her all day long!) I think all three have value.
The last book I read: I actually just re-read Stephen King’s On Writing. Before that, Sing, Unburied Sing by Jesmyn Ward.
Pen & paper or computer: Computer, hands down. I can’t even read my own handwriting anymore. I type really fast, so I’m impatient when working with a pen.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Laina Ming, the lead character in my new book, House of Belonging. She’s the kind of friend I like; strong, independent and funny.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Photographer. I take all of the pictures for my covers. I love to travel too, so I’d probably make a pretty decent gypsy as an alternative.
Favorite decade in fashion history: Ooh. That’s tough. Probably the 1960’s. You had everything from the buttoned-up classic look of Jackie Kennedy to the free style of the hippies. I like diversity in fashion. There needs to be something for everyone.
Place I’d most like to travel: Everywhere! But my top three uncharted locales are Iceland, Scotland and Bhutan.
My signature drink: I’m not a big drinker, but when I do drink, it’s almost always whiskey, neat…and sometimes an Old Fashioned.
Favorite artist: Music artist? U2 Favorite Painter? Vermeer
Number one on my bucket list: I’d love to drive across Canada pulling an airstream trailer, then head south and drive back again across the U.S. I love the nostalgia of camping. I’d light a fire every single night, prop my feet up and write about my travels and the people I met along the way. There is so much to see in the world and so little time.
