Book Review - We Were Strangers Once by Betsy Carter
We are continuing to honor Veterans Day (coming up this Saturday) with a work of historical fiction taking place during WWII. On Tuesday I featured a memoir by a Holocaust survivor (click here to read about The Choice by Dr. Edith Eva Eger.) Today's book begins during WWI with two world-renowned naturalists and their son, Egon. Fast forward to the brink of WWII and Egon is leaving behind a successful medical practice for the relative comfort of a tight-knit group of immigrants in Manhattan.

I listened to We Were Strangers Once by Betsy Carter via Audible - it was performed by Suzanne Toren, who I thought did a phenomenal job with the voices of the wide variety of characters in this book. I've mentioned this many times before, but a narrator can make or break a book when listening to it on Audible...Suzanne definitely made listening to this book a real treat. If you're traveling for Thanksgiving and need to entertain yourself on a long drive, then I'd definitely recommend this one!

My favorite part about this book were the variety of characters and the complexity of the story. It is essentially about how a group of strangers came together and supported one another during the trying times of WWII. Egon left behind a successful medical practice to become "The Cheese Man" at a local grocery store. He begins working on animals who need help and only charges his clients what they can afford - often serving animals at no cost at all. Catrina is the daughter of poor Irish immigrants and serves as his assistant and love interest in the story. I have never met someone who loves dogs as much as I do - but I just found a fictional character who may just love dogs as much if not more than I do! Meyer is a writer who writes a little bio about the work Egon and Catrina are doing to help the neighborhood animals and accidently puts Egon's immigration status in jeapordy.
