I am really loving the theme of female friendships that has been prevalent in the last few books I've read and in my real life. In Next Year in Havana the friendship between Elisa and her childhood friend withstood a revolution, distance, and time. In The Queen of Hearts, the friendship between Zadie and Emma withstood an unexpected betrayal. In my real life, I participated in a great bookish gift exchange for Galentine's Day that brought me unexpected joy and a new social media friend. We are a week past Galentine's Day - but let's keep up the celebration of female friendships and do our best to lift one another up in the days, weeks, and months to come.

The Queen of Hearts by Kimmery Martin is about two childhood friends, Zadie and Emma, who met at camp and remained friends through medical school and into their medical practices. Something happened in their third year that changed the course of their lives but the truth about what happened wasn't revealed until years later. Can the friendship survive such a betrayal and a long-held secret? Is this yet another friendship that will dissolve over a boy?

If you miss the early years of Grey's Anatomy - when Grey and McDreamy were just starting their relationship - then you'll LOVE The Queen of Hearts. Also, you know that scene from My Best Friend's Wedding when Jules confesses everything she's done to sabotage Michael's wedding - they are sitting in the Chicago Union Station and after confessing unthinkable acts Jules says, "There's more." And you're heart sinks as you realize she's going to confess it all. There is a scene like that in this book and my heart sank as I realized this confession could end their friendship. So the mix of Grey's Anatomy and My Best Friend's Wedding - that's what you get with The Queen of Hearts.
