How did you prepare to narrate The Last Train to Key West?
I always pre-read, but it's rare that I get through a whole book in a single day like I did with this one! I truly couldn't put it down.
After a pre-read I begin to “cast” the characters in my head. I try out different voices until I find something that resonates and seems to fit the author’s intentions. Once I feel solid in the story and characters I feel good to go on prep. The day of recording I do a vocal warmup and look at the first couple pages again to get in the headspace of the world of the story. At go-time I connect with the director (over Zoom in these new social-distancing days) and we record!
Other work by Kariss Vacker:
I’m an on-camera and theatre actor. I most recently guest starred on “NCIS.” I’ve also done guest spots on Lethal Weapon, How I Met Your Mother, Castle and Chuck, among a few others. As far as theatre goes, classical theatre is my jam. I’ve been lucky enough to perform lots of Shakespeare and other classical texts which is in large part why I love words so much.
I haven’t had the time in a few years, but I used to do private coaching for actors, and was an acting teacher for several years. It was always an honor to get to work with other actors to help them feel more confident in their work.
