Julia Whelan: Audiobook Narrator
Julia Whelan: Audiobook Narrator
Bio:
Julia Whelan is an actor, writer, and audiobook narrator. She is perhaps best known for her acting work on ABC’s Once and Again and her award-winning narration of over 300 audiobooks (including Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, Tara Westover's Educated, and Kristen Hannah's The Great Alone). After a healthy career as a child actor, Whelan attended Middlebury College and Oxford University, graduating with a degree in English and Creative Writing. Her debut novel, My Oxford Year, was published in 2018 by HarperCollins/William Morrow. In her audiobook career, Whelan has been repeatedly featured on Audiofile Magazine’s annual Best Of lists and has won multiple Audie awards and SOVAS. Among other honors, she was named Audible’s Narrator of the Year in 2014 and is also a Grammy-nominated audiobook director.
How did you prepare to narrate An Anonymous Girl?
I always start with reading the book and creating a list of characters, noting any vocal attributes the author(s) give them. In this case, Barrie and I exchanged notes and character samples before we recorded so we knew we were both on the same page. I'd narrated Greer and Sarah's first book, The Wife Between Us, and it was so much fun to have a partner for this second audiobook.
Other books narrated by Julia:
I have such affection for Gillian Flynn and Gone Girl, but I also narrated a short story of hers that is terrific and doesn't get enough attention. It's called The Grown Up.
If you want a challenging Literary listen, check out Flights by Olga Tokarczuk, translated from Polish by Jennifer Croft.
One of my favorite books that came out last year was Bluff by Michael Kardos. It's basically The Sting with two female leads, one a magician, the other a card cheat.
Other places to find Julia:
An on-camera actor, appearing most recently on NCIS.
A writer, working on her second book. My first novel, My Oxford Year, came out in April of 2018. (And yes, I did the audiobook! And won a Voice Arts award for it, which was hugely gratifying).
Head of Production at Audm, a subscription-based app that puts longform journalism (think The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, WIRED, etc) on audio using the best audiobook narrators in the industry. Don't have time to read all those tabs you have open right now? Let us read them for you.
I'm also a tea sommelier, but aside from making custom blends for friends, I just haven't found the time to make a business out of it.
