5 Things You Don't Know About Me: A Guest Post by Laura Drake
I’m on maternity leave! During this time, a few of my favorite authors offered to step up and write guest posts so that this blog would remain active while I adjust to my new role as a mother. I may also be a bit slower to respond. Thanks for understanding and for being so supportive of me, my family, and my blog. 5 Things You Don't Know About Me: A Guest Post by Laura Drake
Hi all! Laura Drake here, author of 13 Romance and Women’s Fiction Novels.
I’m a bit . . . quirky, so I thought Ashley’s idea of things you don’t know would be fun. So here we go:
I’ve ridden 100,000 miles behind my husband on his motorcycle, and another 100,000 miles on my own! We take all our vacations on motorcycles, and it’s how I fell in love with the West, which is the setting in all of my novels. Funny story—On our first date, he talked the WHOLE time about his divorce. By the end, I was SO out of there. But as he dropped me off on my front porch, he asked if I wanted to go for a motorcycle ride. I figured he couldn’t talk about his ex while riding, so I said yes. We’ve been married over 35 years now!
2. I’m an avid fisherman (woman?) Two girlfriends and I go on a fly-fishing trip every year. About 5 years ago, we were fishing in the middle of nowhere outside Bend, Oregon I was walking across a bunch of downed trees and stepped into a deep hole–and snapped both bones in my lower right leg. Miraculously, I was able to call 911 and a half hour later a Sherriff’s Deputy showed up. No roads close, and he was talking about a helicopter to get me out, when some men came by and suggested putting in a boat downriver. That’s what they did, and an hour and 15 miles of dirt road later, they got me to a hospital and good drugs. Surgery inserted plates screws and wires, and 10 days later I flew home to recuperate.
3. I’m a risk-taker. Besides motorcycling, I’m a roller-coaster nut, I’ve skydived, and to celebrate my 65th birthday, I rappelled off a 15-story building. Trust me, it was easier when I did it in college.
4. I won a RITA! What’s that you ask? It’s the Romance Writers of America’s equivalent of the Oscars. My first book (The Sweet Spot) came out in 2014, and I entered the contest and won in the Best First Book category. Nora Roberts presented me with the award, and it’s one of the biggest highlights of my life!
5. I am a huge bull riding fan. I’ve been to 11 individual events, and 4 world finals. Went once with a broken leg (different fishing incident) but that was okay, because they staged the handicapped just outside the guys locker room doors! I also attended a Bull fighter’s clinic—I’d have fought a bull, but my husband nixed that. This is Jory Markiss, at the time the #10 bull rider in the world, with my first book. If you get the chance to go to an event, do it! It’s like a dangerous ballet. Seriously!
