How did you prepare to narrate Not That I Could Tell?
First of all, I read the entire novel on my iPad. I have an annotation app which lets me make notes, highlight character's voices, write down pronunciations of unfamiliar words, etc. Jessica Strawser's writing is amazing, so I didn't want to stop! I'd get to the end of a chapter and say, "okay, it's late, but one more...." Then we recorded it in a great studio on the Westside in Los Angeles. Basically, I get to the studio, pour a cup of coffee, and off we go! It took about four days to record Not That I Could Tell.
What are your top three books that you’ve narrated (and why!)
That's a tough one! Picking three is hard, but I'd say one is Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset (she won the Nobel Prize for Literature in the 1920s for this trilogy) - it's an epic story of a woman's life in medieval Norway and it deeply affected me....so much so that last summer, my husband and I traveled to Norway. That book entered my bones and I had to see those places for myself!
Another would be a nonfiction book I just narrated called Fly Girls by Keith O'Brien which comes out in August. It tells the story of Amelia Earhart and her female peers during the Golden Age of flying in the 1920s and 30s. You've never heard of many of these women, and it's time for their story to be told. Bravery, courage, and daring, in the face of discrimination. They were trailblazers.
Okay, one more... Speaking of Jessica Strawser, Not That I Could Tell was definitely a great experience to record and the characters stayed with me long after the audiobook was done. I love that! She wrote a book that contained many things - psychological thriller, mystery, suspense, and deep investigation into people's psyches. There's also kind of a dreamlike quality about her writing that takes me to another place...I'm not the same when I'm finished with the book.
Examples of other work you've done?
You may have heard my voice advertising things like Intel, Old Navy, and Hilton hotels! I've also been known to scream a lot in some video games.
