A Butterfly Themed Birthday Party
Butterfly Kisses and Birthday Wishes: Miles' Second Birthday
We chose a butterfly theme for our son’s second birthday because of his pure joy every time he saw one, whether it was fluttering outside, printed in his picture books, or even the small butterfly image on his yogurt packets. His eyes would light up, and his excitement was contagious! He’s also developed an adorable habit of mispronouncing “butterfly” as “firefly,” which just melts our hearts. It felt like the perfect theme to celebrate this sweet phase of his life, where the simple beauty of a butterfly brings so much happiness.
Throwing a gender-neutral birthday party can be a fun and creative way to celebrate any child's special day, and a butterfly theme is perfect for kids who love nature, colors, and a bit of magic! Butterflies symbolize transformation, beauty, and joy—making them a meaningful and inclusive theme that works for all children, regardless of gender. In this post, we’ll share ideas for creating a whimsical butterfly-themed birthday party that’s colorful, fun, and filled with imaginative touches. From decorations to activities, snacks, and take-home favors, these ideas will help you plan a celebration that flutters with excitement and spreads smiles everywhere!
So much has changed since we were planning our son’s first birthday last year. Back then, he was just starting to explore the world, but now he has such a big personality—full of energy, curiosity, and endless giggles. He’s made little friends of his own, and it’s incredible to watch him form his own connections. Personally, we’re also in a much better place than we were a year ago. Last year, we were caring for an ailing father, and it was a difficult time balancing joy and heartache. Now, as we plan his second birthday, there’s a sense of peace and happiness that feels even more special. There is also a lot less pressure on a second birthday than there was on his first. The Butterfly Birthday Invitation
When planning a butterfly-themed birthday party for my son’s second birthday, I was excited about the theme but quickly realized that many of the butterfly invitations I found were too frilly or overly feminine. It was important to me that the design feel gender-neutral, yet still capture the beauty of butterflies without leaning too heavily into pinks and pastels. After some searching, I finally found the perfect option at Paperless Post—a gorgeous invitation with lovely earth tones and subtle butterfly illustrations. It was the perfect balance of natural beauty and understated elegance, and it felt just right for a boy’s celebration.
Butterfly Birthday Decorations
To keep the birthday party as stress-free as possible, I decided to use a local Chicago balloon company, Paris312, for simple but stylish decorations. While browsing their website, I couldn’t find exactly what I had in mind, so I sent them a picture of the invitations and explained the look I was going for. They were amazing to work with and put together a perfectly cohesive bouquet of balloons (see their proposal image below) that matched the earth tones and butterfly theme beautifully. The balloons set the tone for the entire party as soon as guests arrived, making the celebration feel fun and polished without any added stress on my end.
The Butterfly Birthday Cake
ECBG offers custom cakes starting at $200, but I thought I’d save a little money by opting for one of their signature cakes: The Garden Party. It was the perfect starting point to build a cake that suited Miles’ second birthday. Since they aren’t a retail bakery and make everything to order, there is a lot of customization that can happen even when you don’t order a custom cake. I got to choose the cake flavor (funfetti - I thought he’d love the colors) and filling (cream cheese icing, my personal favorite.) They offer a variety of add-ons including edible butterflies, which made this cake the perfect choice. Once I placed my order, I emailed ECBG a picture of the invitation to see what they could do to match the colors and they even offered to change the base color of the cake from bright white to coral/ivory to more closely match the invitation color palette.
The Location
Chicago offers several wonderful venues to host a butterfly-themed birthday party for kids, each with its own charm and appeal. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, with its iconic Judy Istock Butterfly Haven, allows children to be surrounded by live butterflies, making it a magical experience. The museum offers birthday packages that include access to the butterfly exhibit, nature-based activities, and dedicated party spaces. Another great option is the Garfield Park Conservatory, where kids can explore the lush, plant-filled greenhouses, often home to seasonal butterfly exhibits. For a more outdoor experience, North Park Village Nature Center provides a scenic backdrop with nature trails, perfect for a butterfly scavenger hunt or picnic. Additionally, local parks like Lincoln Park or Montrose Beach can be transformed into whimsical butterfly wonderlands with decorations, crafts, and outdoor activities.
However, we opted for a more practical choice: a play space. Hosting a toddler birthday party at a play space offers numerous benefits for both parents and kids. Play spaces are designed with young children in mind, providing safe, age-appropriate equipment that encourages physical activity, exploration, and imaginative play. Many of these venues also handle the setup, cleanup, and party coordination, which takes a lot of stress off parents and allows them to enjoy the celebration. Play spaces often come with built-in entertainment, from ball pits to climbing structures, ensuring that toddlers stay engaged and have a blast. Additionally, indoor play areas are perfect for year-round parties, regardless of the weather, offering a comfortable, controlled environment. With customizable party packages that include snacks, decorations, and even themed activities, hosting at a play space simplifies planning while delivering a fun, memorable experience for toddlers and their guests.
After looking at all of the possibilities we opted for Southport Fundamentals because they were competitively priced, our son was familiar with the space since he’d taken classes there, and they allowed BYOB! So although the location we chose isn’t perfectly on theme, it made for a stress-free party and allowed me (and the other parents) to sit back, relax, and watch our kids have fun.
Butterfly Birthday Outfit
I found this darling personalized butterfly toddler sweatshirt with a gender-neutral boho-style butterfly on Etsy and knew it would be perfect for Miles’ birthday party. I debated what to say on the customization, going back and forth between “Miles is 2” or “I’m 2” or just “2”. In the end we opted for just the number 2 to keep it simple and straight to the point. I also love to dress on theme so I searched for a butterfly outfit for myself and found some great options that were in coordinating colors and in my style. This one happens to be from the juniors department, but it worked great!
