Books Publishing This Week: September 1 - 7

I want to note that I do not get paid to do these posts, I just love authors and the book industry. However, they do take time and energy to create. If you want to donate a few dollars to my coffee fund, which keeps this blog going, you can do so here: https://venmo.com/AshleyHasty or here: http://paypal.me/hastybooklist.

The first morning of September has a particular charm, a soft promise of autumn in the air. It’s early, and the world around you is still quiet, wrapped in the gentle embrace of dawn. The sky is a pale shade of blue, tinged with the faintest hint of pink as the sun begins to rise. You’re in your favorite spot, a comfortable corner of your home where the light filters in just right, casting a warm glow over everything. The window is slightly ajar, letting in the crisp, fresh air that carries the subtle scent of earth and the distant memory of summer.

You’re wearing your favorite cozy brown sweater, the one that feels like a warm hug every time you slip it on. The fabric is soft against your skin, worn in just the right places from years of use. It’s the kind of sweater that makes you feel at home no matter where you are, a reliable companion as the seasons begin to shift.

In your hands is a steaming mug of coffee, the rich, familiar aroma rising up to greet you with every sip. The warmth of the cup seeps into your fingers, spreading a gentle heat through your hands. The coffee is just the way you like it, a perfect balance of strength and smoothness, a little indulgence to start the day. You take a slow sip, savoring the way it wakes you up from the inside out, making you feel more present, more in tune with the world around you.

Beside you on the table is a new book, the spine still uncreased, the pages unturned. There’s something special about starting a new book on a morning like this, when the day is full of possibilities, and the world feels fresh and full of potential. You pick it up, the cover cool against your palm, and settle back into your chair. The soft knit of your sweater presses against your back as you sink deeper into the cushions, finding that perfect spot where you can stay for hours if you want to.

You open the book, the pages whispering softly as they part. The first words greet you, pulling you in with the promise of a new adventure. There’s a thrill in this moment, the beginning of a journey that you know will take you somewhere new, somewhere you’ve never been before. The characters are strangers now, but soon they will be familiar, their lives intertwined with yours in the way that only a good story can achieve.

As you read, the world outside your window begins to stir. Birds start to chirp softly, their songs weaving through the quiet of the morning. The light grows stronger, painting your surroundings with a soft, golden hue. But you’re already lost in the pages, the words wrapping around you like a blanket, as comforting and warm as your sweater.

The story unfolds slowly, each sentence drawing you further in. You find yourself slipping into the rhythm of the book, your mind syncing with the flow of the narrative. The outside world fades, leaving only the words, the characters, and the images they conjure in your mind. You can almost see the scenes playing out before you, as vivid as if they were happening right there in your living room.

Every so often, you take a break to sip your coffee, the warmth of the drink grounding you in the present even as your mind wanders far away with the story. You feel a deep sense of contentment, a quiet joy that comes from these simple pleasures—your coffee, your sweater, and your book. It’s a feeling of being exactly where you need to be, doing exactly what you want to do.

As the morning progresses, you find yourself more and more absorbed in the story. The characters begin to feel like old friends, their struggles and triumphs resonating with you on a personal level. There’s a comfort in their familiarity, in the way they start to feel like a part of your own life.

The coffee in your mug dwindles, but you hardly notice. The light outside grows brighter, but it doesn’t distract you. The book has you in its grip, and you’re happy to let it. You know that this is how you want to spend your morning—lost in the pages of a new book, wrapped in your favorite sweater, sipping coffee as the world wakes up around you.

Fatal Intrusion by Isabella Maldonado and Jeffery Deaver

Fatal Intrusion by Isabella Maldonado and Jeffery Deaver

As a wave of murders grips Southern California, an unlikely pair must untangle the mysterious patterns of an elusive killer. A propulsive new series by New York Times bestselling author Jeffery Deaver and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Isabella Maldonado.

Carmen Sanchez is a tough Homeland Security agent who plays by the rules. But when her sister is attacked, revealing a connection to a series of murders across Southern California, she realizes a conventional investigation will not be enough to stop the ruthless perpetrator.

With nowhere else to turn, Sanchez enlists the aid of Professor Jake Heron, a brilliant and quirky private security expert who, unlike Sanchez, believes rules are merely suggestions. The two have a troubled past, but he owes her a favor and she’s cashing in. They team up to catch the assailant, who, mystifyingly, has no discernible motive and fits no classic criminal profile. All they have to go on is a distinctive tattoo and a singular obsession that gives this chillingly efficient tactician his nickname: Spider.

Over the next seventy-two hours, Sanchez and Heron find themselves in the midst of a lethal chess match with the killer as they race to stop the carnage. As the victims mount, so do the risks. Because this spider’s web of intrigue is more sinister―and goes far deeper―than anyone could possibly anticipate.

Songlight by Moira Buffini

Songlight by Moira Buffini

Star-crossed lovers, against-all-odds friendship, and a brutally unforgiving world make this first in a trilogy utterly unforgettable.

We’re two songs joined. And there’s a word for that. A harmony.

Elsa is used to hiding the most important parts of herself—her feelings for Rye, her distaste for a world ruled by men, and, most crucially, her gift of songlight. She buries that secret deep inside. In Brightland, those with songlight are called Unhumans and are abhorred. Rye is the only other person Elsa has known with songlight, and their shared bond has brought them together.

Elsa’s world begins to fall apart one desperate, heart-wrenching day and she doesn’t know where to turn until a girl appears before her. But the girl isn’t really there—her songlight has been drawn to Elsa’s frantic grief.

Elsa lives in a remote seaside village; Nightingale, her new friend, lives in a city hundreds of miles away with her father, a government official responsible for rooting out Unhumans. The two never expected to connect via songlight. But when they do, and when they realize the extent of their power, they’ll be thrust in the middle of a war that threatens their very existence.

From an award-winning screenwriter making her novel debut comes this powerful, page-turning trilogy perfect for fans of Sabaa Tahir and Adrienne Young.

The Haunting of Moscow House by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore

In this elegant gothic horror tale set in post-revolutionary Russia, two once aristocratic sisters race to uncover their family’s long-buried secrets in a house haunted by a past that is dangerous — and deadly — to remember.

It is the summer of 1921, and a group of Bolsheviks have taken over Irina and Lili Goliteva’s ancestral home in Moscow, a stately mansion falling into disrepair and decay. The remaining members of their aristocratic family are ordered to move into the cramped attic, while the officials take over an entire wing of grand rooms downstairs. The sisters understand it is the way of things and know they must forget their noble upbringing to make their way in this new Soviet Russia. But the house begins to whisper of a traumatic past not as dead as they thought.

Eager to escape it and their unwelcome new landlords, Irina and Lili find jobs with the recently arrived American Relief Administration, meant to ease the post-revolutionary famine in Russia. For the sisters, the ARA provides much-needed food and employment, as well as a chance for sensible Irina to help those less fortunate and artistic Lili to express herself for a good cause. It might just lead them to love, too.

But at home, the spirits of their deceased family awaken, desperate to impart what really happened to them during the Revolution. Soon one of the officials living in the house is found dead. Was his death caused by something supernatural, or by someone all too human? And are Irina and Lili and their family next? Only unearthing the frightening secrets of Moscow House will reveal all. But this means the sisters must dig deep into a past no one in Russia except the dead are allowed to remember.

Make a Home Out of You | Books Publishing This Week

Make a Home Out of You by Ginelle Testa

For readers of Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp comes an unflinching coming-of-age addiction memoir about one woman’s journey to overcome her destructive roots to discover her road to recovery.

Born to an abusive mother and a drug-dealer father, Ginelle Testa is not exactly set up for success—and her early years are just as troubled as one might expect. By the end of her thirteenth year, she’s started experimenting with alcohol and drugs, has fallen prey to anorexia, and has been sexually assaulted. And that’s only the beginning of her spiral down into addiction and disordered eating.

As Ginelle progresses into young adulthood, she hits several substance-related bottoms. In her senior year of college, after blacking out and ending up naked in her dorm’s community shower, she goes to Alcoholics Anonymous and gets sober. But steering clear of drugs and alcohol, she discovers, is not a cure-all—she still has a long way to go before she can truly heal.

Raw, relatable, and powerful, Testa’s is a riveting tale of climbing up from rock bottom—and learning to make a home in oneself instead of in substances and other people.

The Fallen Fruit

Combining history and fantasy, a sweeping multi-generational epic in the vein of Kindred and The Time Traveler's Wife about a woman who travels through time to end a family curse that has plagued her ancestors for generations.

On a rainy day in May 1964, history professor Cecily Bridge-Davis begins to search for the sixty-five acres of land she inherited from her father’s family. The quest leads her to uncover a dark secret: In every generation, one offspring from each Bridge family unit vanishes—and is mysteriously whisked back in time. Rules have been established that must be followed to prevent dire consequences:

Never interfere with past events.

Always carry your free Negro papers.

Search for the survival family packs in the orchard and surrounding forest. The ribbon on the pack designates the decade the pack was made to orient you in time.

Do not speak to strangers unless absolutely necessary.

With only a family Bible and a map marked with the locations of mysterious containers to aid her, Cecily heads to the library, hoping to discover the truth of how this curse began, and how it might be ended. As she moves through time, she encounters a circle of ancestors, including Sabrina Humbles, a free Black woman who must find the courage to seize an opportunity—or lose her heart; Luke Bridge, who traverses battlefields, slavery, and time itself to reunite with his family; Rebecca Bridge, a mother tested by an ominous threat; and Amelia Bridge, a young woman burdened with survivor's guilt who will face the challenge of a lifetime—and change Cecily's life forever. It is a race through time and against the clock to find the answers that will free her family forever.

Shawntelle Madison’s historical fiction debut is an enthralling, page-turning family saga about the inevitability of fate, the invincibility of love, and the indelible bonds of family.

The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen

The gods love to play with us mere mortals. And every hundred years, we let them…

I have never been favored by the gods. Far from it, thanks to Zeus.

Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won't notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus' patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god.

The worst god. Hades.

For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible―the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus. But instead of fighting their own battles, the gods name mortals to compete in their stead.

So why in the Underworld did Hades choose me―a sarcastic nobody with a curse on her shoulders―as his champion? And why does my heart trip every time he says I’m his?

I don’t know if I’m a pawn, bait, or something else entirely to this dangerously tempting god. How can I, when he has more secrets than stars in the sky?

Because Hades is playing by his own rules…and Death will win at any cost.

Becoming Baba Yaga | Books Publishing This Week

Becoming Baba Yaga by Kris Spisak

“With Becoming Baba Yaga, Kris Spisak presents a robust work of scholarship. Baba Yaga is a wily shapeshifter, nearly impossible to pin down—but Spisak miraculously transforms alongside her, ever keeping up.” —from the foreword by GennaRose Nethercott, bestselling author of Thistlefoot

When darkness, fear, and instability inundate our daily lives, folktale figures like Baba Yaga speak to the dichotomy of our existence—the hope and the horror, the magic and the mundane. At once an old hag and an enchantress, a demon and wish granter, a feminist and nothing more than a fairytale, Baba Yaga is an endlessly complex folktale character.

Becoming Baba Yaga provides an in-depth look at the Baba Yaga mythos and history through Slavic folklore. Filled with historical and cultural context, analyses, and the stories themselves that add depth to the conversation. A comprehensive resource for anyone hoping to learn more about this ambiguous character and how her multifaceted presence still ripples through the present day, Becoming Baba Yaga is as thoughtful as it is illuminating.

Spisak explores Baba Yaga’s connection to nature as an Earth goddess and as an herbalist. She also delves into the Shadow Self and Baba Yaga’s aspect as a trickster and places her in a modern context as not merely a witch of the woods but also as an archetype and force for finding your own path. Becoming Baba Yaga shares how she is both a force for good as much as evil and a feminist before her time.
