When the publicist first reached out to me about Things You Save in a Fire, I hesitated to accept. Am I really interested in reading about a female firefighter? Will I be able to relate or will she be my opposite? Ultimately I decided to accept this book for review because it was described as an “incredibly inspiring, entertaining – and ultimately empowering -- summer read.” And the end of the email said, “Given the craziness of our world at the moment… this novel is a much needed breath of fresh air.” God, can I ever relate to that. Yes! Send me the book. And omg am I glad I read this book.

The story is about Cassie, a female fire-fighter in Austin, TX who receives an award for bravery in service. She happens to know the man who is presenting the award from high school and while accepting the award, something snaps and she ends up beating up the guy. She refuses to apologize so she is transferred to another station closer to her family. She has to leave a team she has known for years, a group of guys she knows and trusts. She has to start all over, building up rapport with a new team. She soon realizes that starting fresh in a team that’s been established for years is difficult, to say the least. Someone is bound to get her to quit by writing “slut” on her locker, slashing her tires, and throwing a brick through her window. Will she be able to win over the team and keep her job?

This book starts out with this sentence: The night I became the youngest person - and the only female ever - to win the Austin Fire Department’s valor award, I got propositioned by my partner. I mean, that is a strong start to a book if I’ve ever read one! I was hooked immediately. Through Cassie’s lens, we are able to get a glimpse inside the firefighter culture and especially what it is like to be a female in a male-dominated profession. I LOVED reading about Cassie’s perspective on life and love. This book really lived up to being an incredibly inspiring, entertaining, and empowering summer read.
