I started reading this book on a plane to visit my college friends in Woodstock, Vermont. We were gathering there for a wedding, one of the last in our group. I thought it a great coincidence that I was scheduled to read a book about old college friends the week I was visiting my own college friends. Although my group of friends has very little in common with the group in The Other’s Gold by Elizabeth Ames, there were aspects of their friendship that I could really identify with. It certainly made me look at my group of friends with fresh, appreciative eyes.

The Other’s Gold is about four girls who meet in college after being randomly assigned the same suite. The book is broken into four parts, each of which focusing on one terrible mistake made by each of the friends. We start in college when one friend confesses something she did when she was a kid, then we move to Sophomore year, then postgraduates, and finally to the new parent stage. Each friend struggles with the mistake she made, but her friends are there to help her through.

There were parts of this book that I thought were a little slow, but overall I really enjoyed this study on friendship, life, mental health, and forgiveness. Sometimes I felt their close friendship helped one another, other times I felt it enabled their poor decisions. Of course we all make mistakes in life and I don’t necessarily believe those mistakes should follow us for the rest of our lives. But I did get the sense that their tight-knit friendship may have prevented some of them from getting the help they needed. But alas, I think I’m getting ahead of myself. Clearly I want to discuss this book - perhaps a great book club selection?? I can’t wait to hear what you all think!
