The Coroner by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush begins on Emily’s birthday, she is currently a surgical resident in Chicago and she hasn’t been home in 12 years. Not since she left high school to live with her aunt in the city, shortly after she discovered that her father was lying to her about her mother’s death. So when she got a call from an old high school friend telling her that her father suffered a massive heart attack, Emily found herself heading back to the town that once made her feel suffocated by the tragic loss of her mother. While’s she there, she is asked to step in for her father as medical examiner while he recovers from his heart attack. She is quickly swept back into the small-town life and consumed with trying to catch the killer of a local equestrian star.

I was surprised by how quickly I sailed through this book. I had planned to finish it in 5 days but on day 3 I decided to just keep going because I wanted to know how it ended! That ending, though. Ugh, it left me with a lot of questions…namely, will there be a sequel?? That’ll be my first question for the author tonight at our virtual book club (I hope you’ll join!) There are three main plots to follow in this book: 1) Emily’s relationship with current beau, Brandon and her relationship with high school sweetheart, Nick…which will she choose? 2) What secret was her father keeping from her regarding her mother’s car accident and death. 3) Who killed Julie, the local equestrian star. Two of the three questions were answered and I’m wanting to know the answer to the third!

This was a great mystery, classic for the genre. I love that the author’s own father was a medical examiner - allowing her to really understand Emily’s life as the daughter of an ME. The author has quite a bit of experience writing crime fiction for television shows and film. This isn’t her first foray into the world of mysteries and crime fiction and I think that really came across in this book - it wasn’t too overdone and seemed very practical.
