The Bride Test by Helen Hoang was the book I selected in May from Book of the Month Club. I was in need of a really easy, light-hearted read that would leave me feeling happy in the end. At the time, I was feeling bogged down with work, responsibilities, and life overall. I needed a book escape and that is exactly what I got! I had also heard a lot about The Kiss Quotient by the same author - a book I hadn’t had time to read but my friends said was really good. The “quick take” from Book of the Month Club said, “Liked The Kiss Quotient? This one's even better.” I was sold.

This book is about Khai, a boy with autism who is convinced he is unable to love. He doesn’t realize that he just processes emotions differently, he thinks he is void of emotion for others. His mother is determined to find him a suitable wife, so she travels to Vietnam in search of the perfect bride. This is how she meets Esme, a single mom struggling to make ends meet. Khai’s mom offers to bring Esme to the United States to meet her son and see if they are a match. Esme agrees, reluctantly, determined to do this her way.
Book Review - The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
I had so much fun reading this book. I loved getting to know Khai and Esme, I was rooting for them both through the whole book. My heart broke for both of them as they tried to understand themselves and navigate a difficult world not often welcoming for people a little different from the “norm.” It was romantic and sweet and left me feeling good about humanity. Sometimes you just need a happy book with a good story tied up nicely at the end with a happily ever after.
