I originally agreed to do a book feature of Seven Days of Us, meaning I didn’t have time to read it but it sounded intriguing so I wanted to share it with my readers. As I was writing that book feature, I thought to myself that I really wanted to read this one. Just the quote on the front cover made me laugh: A week is a long time to spend with your family. With the holidays coming up, it just sounded like the perfect book - so not only did I read it, I selected it as November’s Virtual Book Club book! I don’t regret adding this one to my schedule - it was such a fun read.

Seven Days by Francesca Hornak is about a family of 4, two daughters and their parents, coming together to celebrate Christmas. The oldest daughter just returned from treating Haak, a highly contagious disease, in developing countries. So upon her return, she is required to be quarantine (not leave her house or have interactions with the public) for seven days. Her family decides they want to see her for the holidays so they voluntarily agree to be in quarantine with her. But as the quote says, seven days is a long time to be with family. As you might suspect, there are secrets revealed and spats to be resolved.

It is the ultimate Christmas story, one we see in movies from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation to Reese Witherspoon’s Four Christmases. A family comes together after being apart for awhile, they argue and they’re annoyed with one another but it is Christmas so all is forgiven and the family comes back together in the end. Yet, somehow, that doesn’t give away the ending! This book takes a somewhat more serious approach to a story that tends to be humorous. This was not a comedy. Thus, it is a unique take on a classic story. I enjoyed reading it, but I had a hard time relating to any of the characters…nor did they really remind me of any of my family members.
