Book Review - Little Pieces of Me by Alison Hammer

I was first introduced to Alison Hammer by her publicist last year when Alison released her debut novel, YOU AND ME AND US. If I remember correctly, she reached out to me via Twitter (or did I reach out to you, Alison?) Either way, we connected via social media and arranged a time to get brunch…which was a hilarious way to meet because the people sitting at the next table were having a super awkward conversation. Shortly after that brunch, the world shut down due to the pandemic. I didn’t get to see her again until December when I adopted two of her plant babies. But we kept in touch and have plans to eat at all the Chicago restaurants mentioned in her next novel, LITTLE PIECES OF ME.

LITTLE PIECES OF ME is about a girl who gets an unexpected result from a DNA testing website: NPE or not parent expected. As you can imagine, this throws her life upside down. She’s about to get married and she doesn’t even know her who her father is. This explains so much about how she was raised - particularly her mom’s distant attitude toward her - but it leaves her feeling like she doesn’t know who she is. The story is told a a dual timeline: Now, Paige discovering and coming to terms with her DNA Dad; and then, Paige’s mom in college, dating Paige’s dad, and how she ended up pregnant by another man.

This book was wrapping up so nicely…and then I read the final sentence. I texted Alison right away. Wait, WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?! If you’re the type of reader who goes to the last page first - I discourage you from doing that in this book. Let yourself be surprised! I adored reading about the restaurants in Chicago - Alison sprinkled so many of my favorites throughout the novel. And as an added bonus, Paige’s mom lives in St. Louis so I got to read about another city I’m familiar with! You all know I adore reading about characters in creative fields - I don’t want to give too much away but there are a couple of characters that fit that description and Alison did a great job describing their artistic approach. I also love a good art gallery scene. Great things happen in art galleries. I would love for you to read my friend’s book…if only so we can chat about that ending!
