Family Trust by Kathy Wang is about a complex family in search of companionship, success, and wealth. When the patriarch of the family falls ill to cancer, they come together to care for him, say their good-byes, and finally find out what they are to inherit from a sum of wealth he’d be simultaneously bragging about and keeping secret. The characters includes the mom and dad (divorced), and their two children, a son and daughter. The dad’s new wife, the mom’s new boyfriend, the daughter’s husband, and the son’s girlfriend. Plus a variety of friends and co-workers. There were a lot of names to keep straight. Each member of the core family is also struggling with relationship issues and career setbacks.

Cristina Alger, author of The Banker's Wife, described Family Trust by Kathy Wang as a "brilliant mashup of The Nest and Crazy Rich Asians" - two books I really enjoyed reading! So I came into this book with really high hopes. So although I can definitely see where that description came from, there are certainly strong elements of both of those books found in Family Trust, for me…it fell just a little flat. Don’t get me wrong, it was good…just not great. But I should qualify that since I was rushed to finish this book in less time than I usually allot. It arrived later than expected and I wanted to finish it before leaving on vacation. So I am the first to admit that it could have been my circumstances that led to me not fully enjoying this book as much as I had expected.

This book has received a lot of positive reviews, including an Indie Next Pick for November, a Barnes & Noble Discover New Writers pick for fall, and a “best of fall” pick by Entertainment Weekly, Washington Post, Elle, Buzzfeed, AARP, PopSugar, Southern Living. When I hear about all of these accolades, I have to wonder…is it just me? Did I just not get it? Was the timing off? Was I just not in the mood for it? It does have somewhat mixed reviews on Goodreads at the time of writing this post, which makes me feel slightly better. On a positive note, I did like Kathy Wang’s writing style…so I would read more from her. I just wasn’t 100% keen on this particular story.
