Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend
Book Review - Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend by Jenny Colgan
When I agreed to read and review Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend by Jenny Colgan, I had no idea I’d be in much need of an escape from reality while also practicing social distancing. And yet, here we are. The news is heavy, revealing new realities, new restrictions on public life, and ever-increasing cases of coronavirus. I found this book was the perfect light-hearted read during such solemn times. It is important to stay up-to-date on the latest developments, but for a mental-health break to remind that this too will pass, pick up a copy of Jenny Colgan’s latest novel.
Diamonds are a Girls’ Best Friend by Jenny Colgan is about Sophie Chesterton, one of London’s posh It-Girls whose biggest worry in the world is what to wear to that night’s social gathering. That is until her world is turned upside down when, in the span of a single night, she finds her boyfriend cheating on her with her best friend and comes home to find her father died of a heart attack. She’s left without friends or family, her step-mother informs her she won’t receive her inheritance for six months and must fend for herself until then.
Yes, the story is of a poor little rich girl trying to make her way in the big bad world most of us know all too well. She has to find an apartment she can afford, clean it herself, drink diner coffee, and find a job. She gains weight and her hair loses it’s lustrous shine since she can no longer afford regular trips to the hair salon. Of course, she gets stuck in a love triangle and has to face her so-called friends from her old life. In short, it is everything you’d hope for in an entertaining rom-com of a book.
