Inspiration for Crybaby by Cheryl Klein:
Cheryl Klein named her story "Crybaby" in jest. She does repeatedly refer to herself as a crybaby throughout her book, but when you learn about all of the hardships that she endured over a short period of time, you'll agree that she's not a crybaby at all--she's one strong heroine!
Leaning on Roy Lichtenstein's 1963 "masterpiece of melodrama" felt fitting for this cover. I wanted the humor in Lichtenstein's painting to carry over onto this cover, just as Cheryl relies on humor to keep her head up. I chose to zoom in even more onto the woman's face to highlight the single tear dripping down. I also changed the colors of the original illustration so that everything had an even, blue tint. This helped echo Drowning Girl even more while also pushing the illustration into the background and highlighting the text of the cover.
