Book Jacket Designs by Tree Abraham
Judge a Book By Its Cover - Book Jacket Designs by Tree Abraham:
Tree Abraham is a book designer for publishers in Canada (where she’s from), the UK (where she studied), and the US (where she lives). While studying at the University of Brighton, she interned in design studios and at Faber & Faber, Little, Brown, and Vintage Books in London. After graduating, she moved to New York and worked in-house for Abrams Books, Bloomsbury Publishing, and now Grand Central Publishing. Her work employs handmade bricolage, lettering, and a retro palette. Prior to design, Tree spent time doing research in East Africa and South Asia while earning her first degree in International Development and Environmental Sustainability. When she’s not designing other people’s books, she is writing and illustrating her own manuscripts.
Inspiration for Until We Have Faces by Michael Nye:
I am not sure if I could choose a favorite book jacket (but if I could, it would more likely be a killed cover), but I think fondly of Until We Have Faces. I often design short story collections that don’t have an obvious through line. It is deeply satisfying when I can find an object that clicks on multiple conceptual levels. There was something about a smiley disposable bag that felt right for the themes of loneliness and mystery of the everyday in modern economic life of which Nye writes. Also, Canada doesn’t have happy face and thank you plastic bags (nor many plastic bags since they have been phased out for environmental reasons), and every time I see one in a gutter my stomach affectionately somersaults over their pop art stylings.
