Inspiration for Elizabeth Finch:

Its almost impossible to choose a favourite book jacket – often they are the titles that one has worked on recently. Julian Barnes’s new novel Elizabeth Finch is due to be published on 14 April 2022. It has two different colour covers with die cuts that reveal a black and white photograph of a woman by René Groebli, printed on the hardback book’s boards. I was looking to capture the essence of the novel, in which a former student seeks to know his former teacher Elizabeth Finch - a thinker, an inspiration. Very little is revealed about Elizabeth, hence the die cuts revealing a small part of the photograph.

Other book jackets by Suzanne Dean:

The Start of Something by Stuart Dybek, here I commissioned Marion de Man, a Dutch artist to collage together some well sharpened pencils.

The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. I commissioned an illustration from Noma Bar for this Vintage classics edition. What I love most about this book cover is the absence of lettering, the iconic figure communicates the author and title.

Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake. Illustration by Job Wouter

Other work by :

I often create artwork for book projects at the weekend. An example of this is the ink illustration Bluets by Maggie Nelson. Personal projects include The End, where I reproduced movie end credits on ceramics and small canvases - this started during lockdown. Post the latest lockdown, I have just started painting old tin globes with enamel paint.
