Book Jacket Designs by Ronaldo Alves
Judge a Book By Its Cover - Book Jacket Designs by Ronaldo Alves:
Ronaldo Alves, the Art Director for Atmosphere Press, is a multi-disciplinary Graphic Designer born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite this, he’s terrible at soccer. Ronaldo has been creating visual experiences for 15+ years, and is passionate about helping a book achieve its potential. Not surprisingly, he does believe a book can be judged by its cover.
Inspiration for Relatively Painless by Dylan Brody:
Working together with the author to find the right tone, we decided on the idea of representing a dichotomy between the title and the image (pain / painless).
After choosing and manipulating the image, the challenge was to balance the irony between title VS image with a minimalist and sober color palette, using only the colors of the flowers on a neutral background, enhancing the overall contrast.
After the author sent me his initial notes about what he wanted for the cover, I prepared for him five different book covers, some close to what he had in mind and some not close at all. And here's what the author said: "Oh. My. God. The flower. The flower. The flower. The one that is nothing like anything I described. The flower one. #3 of five." I think my guess at what would work for his book was a good one!
