What inspired your design for Under the Gilded Moon by Joy Jordan-Lake?
Under a Gilded Moon is a wonderful historical novel set in 1890s North Carolina. It tells an upstairs/downstairs story of a young woman from the beautiful, but poverty-stricken, Appalachians, clashing with the opulent, newly-constructed Biltmore Estates.
For the cover, the team at Lake Union had a simple idea that they wanted me to try. We wanted to show a woman from the point of view of the Biltmore Estates looking out onto the Blue Ridge Mountains. The idea was to focus in on the main character whose modest background would contrast with the wealth of her changing environment. After one or two attempts at that, it became clear that the beauty of the imagery was in the woman. So we narrowed our focus onto the woman and played up the evocative title and the design elements.
