Inspiration for Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser:
Even though Not That I Could Tell is a standalone novel, I wanted this cover to echo Jessica Strawser’s first book cover, Almost Missed You, which I also designed. The common design elements on both are the damaged paper— cut up paper strips on the first book, burnt paper edges on this— and in person you can see they have the same printed jacket effects.
The editor also asked that I somehow show the book’s opening scene on the cover—a bonfire at night. Since that scene is so specific, I ended up using several images combined together to get it just right—the fire pit and wine glasses were one photograph, the hanging outdoor lights were another, and photographer Jon Halpern shot the adirondack chairs.
