When We Were Young and Brave
Book Feature - When We Were Young and Brave by Hazel Gaynor
HBL Note: I love Hazel Gaynor novels! I first read a book by her that she co-wrote with Heather Webb called Last Christmas in Paris, and then I read another book written by the two of them called Meet Me in Monaco. I adored both books, and I’m thrilled that I finally get to feature a solo Hazel Gaynor novel! This book is about “a little-known piece of history while offering a story of hope during challenging times—something we all could use right now.” Scroll down to read more about When We Were Young and Brave by Hazel Gaynor.
From the publisher:
China, December 1941. The Japanese Imperial Army invades and takes control of the Chefoo School for American and British missionaries' children based in Yantai, China. The teachers and students must adapt to their new way of life under the watchful eye of Japanese soldiers. Inspired by true events, WHEN WE WERE YOUNG & BRAVE (on sale October 6) is an unforgettable novel about impossible choices and unimaginable hardship, and the life-changing bonds formed between a young girl and her teacher in a remote corner of a terrible war.
Elspeth Kent left an unhappy life in England to teach at Chefoo School, but is preparing to return home to help the war effort when a terrible twist of fate changes her plans. Meanwhile, even though she’s been separated from her parents, ten-year-old Nancy Plummer has always felt safe at Chefoo School. But when Japanese forces take control of the school, uncertainty and fear reign supreme. The children turn to their teachers – to Miss Kent and her new Girl Guide patrol especially – for help.
Faced with the relentless challenges of oppression, the school community must rely on their courage, faith and friendships as they pray for liberation – but worse is to come when they are sent to a distant internment camp where even greater uncertainty and danger await.
