Book Feature - To Love and To Loathe by Martha Waters

HBL Note: Martha Waters’ books have some of my favorite titles! The first book I featured by her was To Have and To Hoax, which came out in 2020. To Love and To Loathe is the second book in The Regency Vows series. This novel is about two people who never agree on anything…except a no-strings-attached affair. Since I interviewed Martha last year along with the release of her first novel in this series, this year I’m featuring a preview of the prologue, so you can “try it on” before buying it (fair warning: you’ll want to buy it!) Scroll down to read more about To Love and To Loathe by Martha Waters.

From the publisher:

From Martha Waters, author of To Have and to Hoax (April 2020), praised by Entertainment Weekly for its “abundance of heart” and a best April romance selection by PopSugar, Bustle, and Goodreads, comes TO LOVE AND TO LOATHE (4/6/21; Atria). This “sweet, sexy, and utterly fun” (Emily Henry, NYT bestselling author of Beach Read) story follows a man and woman who never agree on anything—until they agree to a no-strings-attached affair in this Regency-era romp.

The widowed Diana, Lady Templeton and Jeremy, Marquess of Willingham are infamous among English high society as much for their sharp-tongued bickering as their flirtation. (Readers may recognize Diana and Jeremy from Martha’s first novel, but this book acts as a true standalone and companion.) After his latest mistress criticized his bedroom skills, Jeremy goes to Diana, the only woman he trusts to be truthful. He suggests they embark on a brief affair while at his upcoming house party—Jeremy can receive an honest critique and Diana can use the gossip to signal to other gentlemen that she’s interested in taking a lover. But the more time Diana and Jeremy spend together, the more they come to understand that their years of bickering may have concealed a very simple fact: they might actually be a perfect match.

Effervescent, charming and swoon-worthy, and perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Evie Dunmore, TO LOVE AND TO LOATHE proves that Martha Waters is a rising star in historical fiction as she straddles the line between the enemies-to-lovers and friends-to-lovers trope with her signature “cheeky charm and wonderfully wry wit” (Booklist, starred review).
