HBL Note: One of my very good friends is Kristin “Baker Bettie” Hoffman. We met (and you won’t believe this) on Bumble BFF. I It’s just like the dating app, but instead you’re swiping left or right to find friends. I met some really cool people this way (in pre-pandemic times.) Our first friend “date” was to a farmer’s market because, at the time, Kristin was a private chef (which entails a lot of the glamorous things you’re imagining but also a lot of unglamorous things you couldn’t possibly imagine. But that’s her story to tell. And she has, on TikTok.)
Kristin and I are an unlikely duo. I’m not much of a cook. And she doesn’t read a lot of fiction. And yet, we get along SO well. Lucky for me, she hasn’t yet tired of answering my many many many many cooking and baking questions over the years. When I moved back to Chicago, she gifted us a DoorDash gift card so that we could order in food on moving day. I hadn’t even thought about what we’d do for food that day. But she knew my pots and pans would be buried in a box I couldn’t find and she solved that problem before I even knew it existed. Everyone should have a friend like Kristin.
I got a front-row view of the time, energy, and effort Kristin put into this cookbook. I’ll never forget when she first told me she was going to do this. Or the first time I told her I was working on a manuscript. I still enjoy exchanging stories with her about the book industry and comparing the differences between what it is like to publish fiction versus nonfiction.
Next week her book will be published. I can hardly believe the day is almost here. It’ll be out there in the world so that everyone can turn to Kristin to better understand baking. You don’t have the haver her personal phone number to have her in your kitchen, guiding you through the process. You can pick up her book and she’ll tell you what will happen if you substitute powdered sugar when the recipe calls for granulated sugar. (Why is it that I never seem to have all the ingredients I need - there is always one I missed.)
I couldn’t be more proud of my friend and her beautiful cookbook. It would make the perfect gift for a college graduate getting their first apartment, newlyweds, recently retired, someone who doesn’t enjoy cooking (like me) and someone who loves it a lot (like my husband.)
