Author Interview - Victoria Christopher Murray
Author of THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN
When Belle da Costa Greene walked into JP Morgan’s library at the age of 26, neither she nor Morgan had any idea how influential she would become in his life. From acquiring rare books and manuscripts to building his art collection, Belle became one of the most powerful women in the art world. It was quite an accomplishment for any woman at that time, but especially amazing for Belle da Costa Greene who held a secret that, if uncovered, would destroy everything she had achieved. No one knew that her olive-toned complexion was the clue to her true identity...no one knew that Belle da Costa Greene was Black.
Author I draw inspiration from: As a young reader: Richard Wright
As an older writer: Eric Jerome Dickey
Favorite place to read a book: Anywhere my eyes can be open. I love to read all the time. But laying on a beach with the sun overhead and the water at my feet is probably my all time favorite place.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: I really can’t think of a character I’d want to spend that kind of time with. So...what about a real “character”....Michelle Obama, Becoming.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I was seven years old and I wrote a play. It was a masterpiece, something that was easy for me to accomplish since I plagiarized all the masterpieces that I knew at the time. My story included three bears, three pigs, seven little people and a good witch and a bad witch. My second grade teacher loved it and had the entire second grade perform it as a play. I knew from that time on that I WOULD be an author.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I buy the ebook and audiobook for every single book. I listen while I’m out walking and then, I read it every other time. I love that it syncs.
The last book I read: The Son of Mr. Suleman, Eric Jerome Dickey
Pen & paper or computer: IPad. Seriously, every book I’ve written since 2010, I’ve written on an iPad. (With a full keyboard, of course.)
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Pheby Delores Brown, Yellow Wife Sadeqa Johnson
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: Teaching writing and wishing I were an author.
Favorite decade in fashion history: The sixties because there is nothing better than bell bottom jeans, go-go boots and big afros.
Place I’d most like to travel: I’ve been a lot of places, but would love to go to South Africa.
My signature drink: Whiskey sours.
Favorite artist: Michael Jackson...a musical genius.
Number one on my bucket list: Believe it or not, I don’t have a bucket list. Anything that I’d like to do or accomplish, I set up to do it and accomplish it.
Anything else you'd like to add: Nope. These were great questions.
