Author Interview - Patti Callahan

Author of SURVIVING SAVANNAH

“SURVIVING SAVANNAH is the captivating untold true story of the sinking of the steamship Pulaski, known as the “Titanic of the South.” Alternating between modern day and 1838 when the ship sank with many members of Savannah’s elite on board, Callahan weaves an intricate and evocative tale, asking questions about survival, sacrifice, loss, legacy, fate, and choice. Centering the story around three protagonists—Lilly and Augusta in the past and Everly in the present—Callahan delivers a moving and powerful exploration of what women will do to endure in the face of tragedy and the myriad ways we “survive the surviving.” SURVIVING SAVANNAH is a meticulously researched story drawn from accounts from actual survivors of the shipwreck, newspaper articles, and handwritten letters. And in sweet synchronicity, just a few weeks into Callahan’s research, the actual steamship Pulaski was found thirty miles off the coast of Wilmington, NC, a hundred feet deep. Callahan was given rare access to the recovery mission and the artifacts retrieved, which gave her great insight into its history and which will enhance her presentation.”
