Author Interview - Noelle Salazar
Author of Angels of the Resistance
As bombs fall across Europe, fourteen-year-old Lien Vinke fears that the reality of war is inescapable. Though she lives a quiet life with her mother and older sister, Elif, in their small town of Haarlem, they are no strangers to heartache, having recently suffered an immeasurable loss. And when the Nazis invade the Netherlands, joining the Dutch resistance with Elif offers just the atonement Lien craves. But a deeply personal mission jeopardizes everything she holds dear - threatening her friendships, her family, and her one shot at redemption.
Author I draw inspiration from: Where do I start? There are so many and for different reasons! Erin Morgenstern because I'm certain she is made of magic. Emily Henry for her banter and fun, easy style. Kate Quinn for her gorgeous characters and attention to historical detail. Chloe Benjamin for her intriguing premises. Dan Hanks for dowsing me in nostalgia, while taking me on an adventure, Jamie Pacton for her honest and beautiful storytelling. And Chris Panatier for making me laugh more than should be legal.
Favorite place to read a book: I love to be tucked into the corner of a couch. An armrest to lean on, an end table for tea and snacks. A window to stare out and ponder when a scene hits me just so.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Celia Bowen from The Night Circus by: Erin Morgenstern
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I've been making up stories for as long as I can remember. My first memory is of me imagining. I even remember the scene I created in my mind. I was three years old. But I never thought I could be an author. I just didn't believe I could make that work out for myself. Until one day, at the age of thirty-four, I sat down and started writing a book. Eight months later it was finished. A few months later I attended a writer's conference and after the first day, I knew I would never stop writing.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Paperback. I have a terrible time reading anything but what I'm currently working on on a screen. I do love audiobooks, but only nonfiction. I like hearing the author tell their true life story.
The last book I read: While We Were Dating by Jasmine Guillory - such a great read!
Pen & paper or computer: I love taking extensive notes with pen and paper, and writing short scenes out of order for whatever I'm working on. But I mostly work on my laptop.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Is it a cliché to say Elizabeth Bennett? (Pride and Prejudice by: Jane Austen) I love her sharp wit and sometimes wicked tongue. And how she cares so deeply.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: Photographer
Favorite decade in fashion history: 1920s. No 70s. No 20s. No... yes. Dropped-waist dresses and cloche hats v. stripes and bell-bottoms. How does one decide??
Place I’d most like to travel: I'd like to see every inch of Italy. I've only scratched the surface. I need more.
My signature drink: I adore an Apérol Spritz these days. But I'm always good for a pint of Guinness.
Favorite artist: Monet. I would like to walk through the gardens he painted.
Number one on my bucket list: Own a stone cottage in the English countryside.
