Author Interview - Nicole Baart

Author of Everything We Didn't Say

Everything We Didn’t Say is the story of Juniper Baker, a special archives librarian in Denver, Colorado, who returns to her hometown in Iowa ostensibly to help an old friend. Really, she’s come back to investigate the nearly fifteen-year old double murder that ruined her life, and win back the daughter she left behind. It’s a domestic suspense novel firmly grounded in a rural, Midwestern setting that deals with themes of family, the environmental impact of big agriculture, and the double-edged sword that is small town life. As the narrative toggles between past and present, summer and winter, and June’s nineteen-year-old naïveté and her much more jaded thirty-four-year-old self, Juniper’s story unfolds in some really unexpected ways. It’s stylistically reminiscent of Little Fires Everywhere, and will appeal to fans of Heather Gudenkauf, Wendy Walker, and Joshilyn Jackson.

Author I draw inspiration from: William Kent Krueger has long been a huge inspiration--and a mentor--to me. We share an agent, and when I was a newbie author with no clue how to navigate the publishing world, he took me under his wing. He's kind and generous and ridiculously talented. His books simultaneously keep me on the edge of my seat and break my heart.
