Author Interview - Molly Greeley

Author of The Heiress

“As a fussy baby, Anne de Bourgh’s doctor prescribed laudanum to quiet her, and now the young woman must take the opium-heavy tincture every day. Growing up sheltered and confined, removed from sunshine and fresh air, the pale and overly slender Anne grew up with few companions except her cousins, including Fitzwilliam Darcy. ThroughThe Heiressout their childhoods, it was understood that Darcy and Anne would marry and combine their vast estates of Pemberley and Rosings. But Darcy does not love Anne or want her.”

Author I draw inspiration from: Virginia Woolf for her incredible ability to write the deep-dark insides of people, and Anne Tyler, John Steinbeck, Willa Cather, and Elizabeth Strout for their ability to show us how meaningful the everyday, as opposed to the big events of history, truly is.

Favorite place to read a book: Curled up in a comfy chair with a cup of coffee beside me.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Olive Kitteridge, just to meet her; though the experience probably wouldn't be a comfortable one.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I wrote my first story when I was six or so.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: All of the above, all for different reasons. Audiobooks for busy lifestyles, ebooks for carrying many stories easily when traveling, hardbacks because they're lovely and lasting, and paperbacks because I just love to read actual books, but I'm hard enough on my favorite reads that the price point of paperbacks lets me justify eating and drinking while I read them or (covers face) cracking the spines.

The last book I read: Redhead by the Side of the Road, by Anne Tyler

Pen & paper or computer: Computer

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Anne Elliot from Persuasion.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: Probably a teacher, deeply frustrated because I wasn't writing.

Favorite decade in fashion history: Oh goodness. As a devotee of comfort, I love living in a time when leggings are considered a valid fashion choice, but for pure aesthetics I'd say the early decades of the 1500s.

Place I’d most like to travel: India

My signature drink: Black coffee in the morning, on-the-dry-side red wine at night.

Favorite artist: Sally Nixon, who creates these delightful, honest, totally relatable slice-of-life illustrations, including pictures of what people (and particularly women) do and look like when they're not being watched.

Number one on my bucket list: Return to Scotland with my husband, this time with our kids.
