Author Interview - Mim Eichmann
Author of Whatever Happened to Cathy Martin
Kathy Reichs meets Sherlock Holmes in this Midwest gothic journey set in southern Indiana in 1978 that seeks to unravel a deadly tangled web of lies surrounding three former high school friends, one of whom has now been missing for over a decade … but which one? And why?
Author I draw inspiration from: For my historical fiction books, 'A Sparrow Alone' (2020) and 'Muskrat Ramble' (2021), my inspiration came from women's journals, diaries, letters and novellas written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For 'Whatever Happened to Cathy Martin' much of the inspiration has come from personal experience as a newspaper clerk in South Bend, Indiana in the early 1970s, along with contemporary thriller/mystery authors Kathy Reichs, Elizabeth George and Faye Kellerman as well as tv crime series such as Forensic Files, Rockford Files and Columbo. I also watched all of the Sherlock Holmes films from the '30s and '40s starring Basil Rathbone as the master detective.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I wrote my first novel the year I retired from my full time job -- I'd been researching the book for decades and decided that it was firmly on the top rung of my bucket list for that year -- 2017. I'd only intended to write the one book. Situations of my own characters shoved me along to write the sequel ... then Covid isolation propelled me to stretch further and pen yet a third book in a completely different genre. So I guess one could say I came into this experience by the back door!
