Author I draw inspiration from: There are several, including Agatha Christie, Tom Wolfe and Margaret Atwood.
Favorite place to read a book: In the bath.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: The Schlegel sisters from Howard’s End. They’d be calm, kindly and entertaining. I’d need all three as I’m a claustrophobe.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I read Margaret Atwood’s The Edible Woman on holiday in 2001. I remember the moment exactly. I thought, ‘I could do this.’ (So naïve.)
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Hardback. They’re so posh and pristine – the perfect gift.
The last book I read: When Tom Wolfe died, I re-read Bonfire of the Vanities.
Pen & paper or computer: I have an ancient MacBook Air and constantly threaten to throw it out, while clinging to it. I also have a notebook with ‘Bestseller’ engraved on the front, a gift from an optimist friend!
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: It would be fun to party with Sebastian Flyte and Anthony Blanche in Brideshead Revisted, but I’d want to jump off the train before it got messy, so maybe not besties.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: A tennis pundit, perhaps. I’m a keen follower of the game.
Favorite decade in fashion history: The Sixties, not for the mini skirts but for the Anita Pallenberg/Talitha Getty-style Moroccan boho get-ups.
Place I’d most like to travel: I’d love to cruise down the Nile on the vintage paddle steamer the SS Sudan, which Agatha Christie travelled on – all wood panelling and martinis.
My signature drink: Kir royale.
Favorite artist: Hard to say, maybe Cézanne.
Number one on my bucket list: I don’t have a bucket list. I’m in denial.
