Author Interview - Linda Stewart Henley

Author of Kate's War

With the threat of invasion and bombing by Germany hanging heavily over England at the start of World War II, twenty-year-old Kate is devastated when she's forced to postpone her dream of a singing career to help out at home. When she finds herself responsible for the well-being of a young Jewish girl, her priorities change in ways she never imagined.

Author I draw inspiration from:

Ann Patchett - BEL CANTO

Favorite place to read a book:

coffee shop

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Amor Towles - A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW. I'd ask him how he was able to so seamlessly weave historical information about pre-Communist Russia into his novel while making the story and the protagonist in a limited setting so intriguing.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

Once my first book was accepted for publication.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

I like hardback books best because they're so easy to read. They stay open! Probably my next favorite option is an audiobook, but only if it's well narrated. My least favorite (and one I avoid) is an ebook. I like the feel of a book in my hands with pages I can mark to read again if I want.

The last book I read:

TOM LAKE by Ann Patchett. I haven't quite finished it and some of the passages lost my interest, but overall, it's a wonderful read. The author writes so well about family life and the nuances and connections between members. There's also a calmness about her prose. It's easy to feel comfortable in the world she creates, despite the occasional tension.

Pen & paper or computer:

Only computer, as long as it works. Sometimes it doesn't, and that is just awful.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Cate Adamson from Linda Moore's book ATTRIBUTION. I admire her courage and her passion for art. As a painter myself, I can appreciate the complexity of the art world and providence and the protagonist's struggles to achieve authenticity.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

I have had some success as a watercolor painter.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

Probably the fifties. I like the more formal style of dressing.

Place I’d most like to travel:

Norway for its beauty and because it was the composer Grieg's homeland.

My signature drink:

Gin gimlet

Favorite artist:

Vermeer

Number one on my bucket list:

Going to New England in the summer again.

Anything else you'd like to add:

I never expected to become an author, but I love the way publishing has opened up my world.
