Author Interview - Lexi Blake
Author of Start Us Up
Ivy is a high tech coder who reached the heights of Silicon Valley and lost it all. Heath is brilliant but just getting started. When he and Ivy meet, it's attraction at first sight. And they just might be able to help each other if they can navigate the glittering world of Manhattan angel investors.
Author I draw inspiration from:
I always tell people my favorite book is Trust Me by Jayne Ann Krentz. I think I draw a lot of inspiration from her work. Her quirky, independent heroines really had an impact on me as a younger reader. These days I love Rebecca Zanetti, Jennifer Armentrout, Nikki Sloane, Ann Aguirre. There are so many great authors working in romance that it's hard to choose.
Favorite place to read a book:
In my swimming pool. I have waterproof Kindle and I like to float the afternoon away.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:
I would pick my favorite brother from JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood - Rhage. First because he would give me something nice to look at while I'm stuck. Second he would have some candy on him. And I know the other brothers would come and get us out and then we'd go back to the mansion for some excellent food.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
I think I always wanted to write. I don't remember a time when I didn't. I wanted to be a journalist first but then I realized I'm not good at talking to people. I tried my hand at playwriting and had some success but writing that first novel when I was in my twenties solidified that this was really my path.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
I love a hardback as a collector's edition, but I don't like reading them. Paperback was what I loved when I was younger and my eyes were sharper. I'm an ebook lover! I adore being able to take my library with me. I adore audio books. If I'm super into a story I'll buy the ebook and the audio book so I don't have to stop the story when I have to get up and cook.
The last book I read:
The Wolf Lord by Ann Aguirre. It's the third in her Ars Numina series and what I love about it is how mature her characters are. They're adults and make choices that are right for who they are. I love the world she's built there.
Pen & paper or computer:
I write five days a week. I get on a Zoom with two of my best friends and we knock out our word counts by sprinting for twenty-five minutes and then take a seven minute break. Having co-workers has been a revelation. It helps me focus.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with:
Anna Albertini from Disorderly Conduct by Rebecca Zanetti. She's a lawyer with a flair for fashion and we would get along so well. We both love shoes and a good glass of wine. I would love to be part of her big family.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:
I would have gone back to school and become a therapist. I think I would be a good one. I'm pretty good at listening. I would love to help people find a way to make their lives better.
Favorite decade in fashion history:
The 40's. I love dresses from this era and the way women did their hair and makeup. There's something very sexy and classy about that era.
Place I’d most like to travel:
Tokyo. I've been all over Europe. I'd love to see some of Asia. I write about the places I've been to and i think Japan would have some unique experiences that would inspire me.
My signature drink:
Hendrick's martini up with a twist
Favorite artist:
Snow Patrol. Every song is inspiring. I can't tell you how often I listen to their music and a scene pops into my head.
Number one on my bucket list:
Selling a screenplay. I recently finished my first screenplay--just in time for the WGA strike. So I'm waiting that out, but when I can, I'm going to really try to get it out in the world.
Anything else you'd like to add:
Thanks so much for having me!
