Author Interview - Lacy Fewer

Author of Yankeeland

Fiercely independent and passionate, Brigid feels hindered by her family and the strict society of her small Irish town in the early 1900s. Brigid and her cousin Molly, who is more like a sister, dream of a new life in the seemingly unlimited land of opportunity they call Yankeeland—America. Brigid gets her chance when she emigrates with her husband Ben and her brother James, while Molly stays in Ireland. But when Brigid’s quest to have a child leads her to seek unconventional help, her mental stability is questioned. She is soon caught up in a patriarchal medical establishment she has little power to fight. The new life in America Brigid dreamed about takes a drastic turn. Decades later Brigid’s grandniece discovers a sack full of letters between the two cousins. She unravels the story and vows to tell the tale of what really happened to Brigid in Yankeeland.

Favorite place to read a book:

Anywhere my hands are free to hold it! I love reading a physical book

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Any of the Mitford Sisters, The Mitford Girls, by Mary S. Lovell. I can see myself struggling to get a word in edge ways as they all chattered over each other. Oh how I would love for just one moment to be in their presence, taking in their beauty, style closing my eyes to the scent of their perfumes and listening to their high class 'U' tones.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

As a very young child I was fascinated with how a book could transport you to a world where everything always worked out o.k. in the end. I always dreamed of being able to bring my love of storytelling to a wider audience.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Hardbacks are reserved for my treasured books which I will read multiple times alongside my historical purchases. I have an inability to pass any bookstore without making a purchase so Paperbacks are reserved for this frequent occassion. Ebook and audiobook is not my preferred choice and will only choose if not available in any other format. I am an old fashioned physical copy type of reader.

The last book I read:

Long Island by Colm Toibin - I was a huge fan of Brooklyn and equally loved this continuation of Eilis life in 1970's Ireland and America

Pen & paper or computer:

Computer all the way

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Benny Hogan from Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy - I loved her authenticity, her sense of fun and her predisposition to being kind - whilst not being a walkover - all wonderful attributes in any good friend. You want someone by your side who you can have fun with, who will always have your back and who knows you inside out.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

Theatre actress

Favorite decade in fashion history:

The elegance of the 1940's

Place I’d most like to travel:

Anywhere in the U.S.A. - Growing up in 1970's Ireland, America was the dream. I had a friend whose mother was an Air Hostess and their house was always filled with purchases from America, always luxurious and modern. There is nowhere in the world that excites me more than travelling in the U.S.A - I love the diversity across the various states.

My signature drink:

Sparkling water with a dash of lime

Favorite artist:

Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby - I adore all the early crooners

Number one on my bucket list:

Writing and more writing - it is my happy place

Anything else you'd like to add:

As some light a candle my pilgrimage is to the bookstore. The touch, the feel, the scent of a new book inviting me into its world. In those moments time stands still.

People fascinate me, with no fixed type, my insatiable questions can get the better of me.

My life in the corporate world of Finance has enriched me with a window into people's lives from all walks of life.

I am a connector, I am a doer, I say what I see. Forever grateful and positive in equal measure. I make myself smile, fun always finds me. My three children are my greatest gift in life, all that I do is for them.

My advice is to get out of your own way, be curious about the incredible people you interact with and you will discover the truth in the six degrees of separation.

Never walk past a behaviour you do not accept, don't pull up the ladder behind you and if it is the right thing to do, do it.

Being human is to make mistakes, there is no such thing as a perfect life.

It can be a comfort to go hand in hand so when you find good people, hold on tight.

Be kind
