Author of Real Bad Things

Twenty-five years ago, Jane Mooney confessed to murdering her stepfather – but with no body, the police decided not to charge her. She’s spent those years as far as she could get from her hometown of Maud, along the banks of the Arkansas River. But nothing stays lost forever, and when a flood brings Warren’s body back to the attention of the living, Jane finally heads home, to deal with the past, and with the family she thought she’d left behind forever.--from Mystery & Suspense Magazine

Author I draw inspiration from: Jesmyn Ward. She writes about fractured lives in the South like no one else.

Favorite place to read a book: In bed

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Natural-born healer Emma Starling from Annie Hartnett's hilarious and heartwarming Unlikely Animals

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: How could a wild dog girl from Arkansas become an author? It wasn’t even the realm of possibility until after I attended my first Novel Incubator workshop that I realized it was a thing one could do.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: My preference depends on my mood. If I’m relaxing during the day, I like a hardback or paperback (but I always take off the dust jacket of hardbacks because they get in my way). If it’s at night in bed, an ebook is easier. And if I’m house painting or doing otherwise boring household chores that are a time suck, I like to dive into an audiobook.

The last book I read: On Good Authority by Briana Una McGuckin

Pen & paper or computer: Both. I use a notebook to jot down ideas on the fly and to make to do lists and outlines, both of which I love (though I've been using the Notes app more for this in recent years). There’s no way my hands can handle writing an entire novel in long hand. Bless the people who can, but I’m not one of them.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: The narrator of My Year of Rest and Relaxation from Ottessa Moshfegh

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: A historian

Favorite decade in fashion history: For me, now. I’m mostly in pjs and hoodies. For laying on the couch and watching others be fabulous, the Victorian era. I love all that buttoned-up intrigue and repressed desire.

Place I’d most like to travel: The Galápagos Islands

My signature drink: A full bodied red wine

Favorite artist: Impossible to answer. But the biggest inspirations throughout my creative life have been musicians PJ Harvey and Patty Griffin.

Number one on my bucket list: Going on a small group travel trip for two weeks with all my closest friends.
