Author Interview - James Bailey
Author of The Flip Side.
“To coin a phrase, Josh is suffering a quarter-life crisis. He just broke up with his long-term girlfriend, lost his job, and moved back home with his parents (shudder). Welcome to rock bottom in Bristol. As Josh starts questioning all his life choices, he has a mad thought: Maybe he would just be better flipping a coin. After all, careful planning has landed him homeless, jobless, and single. What starts as a joke soon becomes serious and Josh decides to start putting his faith in the capriciousness of currency. He doesn’t have anything to lose. But when the chance of a lifetime and the girl of his dreams are on the line, will the coin guide him to a rich love life or leave him flat broke?”
Author I draw inspiration from: I've always really loved the books of Nick Hornby and David Nicholls.
Favorite place to read a book: It has to be on holiday! It's always nice when you can relax, unwind, and properly enjoy reading without any other worries.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I've always enjoyed writing, and I wanted to be a journalist for a long time. I don't know if I ever wanted to become an author per se; I just had a story I wanted to write and it went from there.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I'm definitely a paperback person. I know ebooks are very convenient but I do like the feel of a book, and paperbacks are easier to carry around than hardbacks. I've never really got into audiobooks - maybe I will give them another try.
The last book I read: I'm currently writing 'Book 2' so I haven't had as much chance to read as I like, but the last book I read was 'Keeping Mum' by James Gould-Bourn.
Pen & paper or computer: I can't imagine writing a whole novel with pen and paper. That said I do prefer making notes with pen and paper, before switching to the computer to type them up. The one major benefit of pen and paper is that you don't get distracted by the internet every two seconds!
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Oh good question. I'd like Brian Jackson (Starter for Ten) to be in my pub quiz team. And I'd like to attend one of Jay Gatsby's parties!
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: If I could be anything I'd be a football player!
Place I’d most like to travel: I've been fortunate to travel to many countries across the world. But I think the places I'd love to visit next are Jordan, Egypt, and Bolivia. Easter Island and the Galapagos Islands are very high on my bucket list too.
Favorite artist: I have a very eclectic music taste, but Van Morrison is probably my favourite artist.
