Author I draw inspiration from: Truman Capote, whose books and short stories I return to again and again. He wrote in a seamless way that instantly draws the reader in; his work is all but impossible to put down. It’s very hard to write like that, but for the reader it’s as immediate and immersive as stepping into a warm bath.

Favorite place to read a book: I love to grab a book to read while I’m in the kitchen waiting for something to cook. Many meals have been burned that way!

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Fearless Jones.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I was always writing stories as a child, and my fourth-grade teacher gave me a novel by Mary Stewart; in it she wrote, I can’t wait to read the books you write. Never underestimate the power of a wonderful teacher.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: All of the above! I love paperbacks best since they’re easy to carry anywhere. For books written by friends, I want a hardcover.

The last book I read: They All Fall Down by Rachel Howzell Hall, which was spectacular.

Pen & paper or computer: Most of my writing is done on a computer, but when I am stuck, I always turn to pen and paper to sort it out.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: V.I. Warshawski.

If I wasn’t an author, I’d be an: Astronaut, ninja, or pirate. Those seem like the only reasonable options.

Favorite decade in fashion history: The 1950s.

Place I’d most like to travel: I was a travel writer for years, and I was fortunate enough to see many spectacular places, from Easter Island and Machu Picchu to Jerusalem and Ephesus. But I’ve never seen the Galapagos Islands and I dream of going there.

My signature drink: Sparling wine—cava, prosecco, or champagne.

Favorite artist: Too many to name! A few favorites in different fields: Prince, Tamara de Lempicka, Hozier, Edward Gorey, Florence Welch.

Number one on my bucket list: Space travel
