Author Interview - Gabi Coatsworth
Author of My memoir - Love's Journey Home
Gabi and Jay fell passionately in love many years go. But their relationship seemed destined for heartache. A terminal diagnosis would teach them the true meaning of love.
This relatable story will resonate with readers who long to know that love can endure despite the many obstacles life puts in its way. Part romance, part medical memoir, all heart, it’s for everyone who needs to know that they can make it through life’s hardships and find happiness again.
Author I draw inspiration from: Many, including Jacqueline Winspear, whose memoir of an English childhood resonated with me, and humorous writers like P.G. Wodehouse, who show me how to keep a sense of humor when I write.
Favorite place to read a book: On my grandmother's 100-year-old sofa, which I brought with me all the way from England
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Elizabeth, in the Thursday Murder Club, by Richard Osman. She's a retired spy who solves crimes with her friends, and I know she'd be wonderful to talk to. She might even know how to fix the elevator!
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I realized I wanted to be an author, rather than a writer, after I began writing and realized that if I didn't get anything published, I'd never know whether I was any good. Without readers, it seems to me, a book is not a book.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: MY book will be published in all three formats. For myself, I enjoy reading in all formats, though mostly I prefer a paperback to a hardback, just because of the weight and portability. I like to have something to read everywhere I go. It helps pass the time on a train ride, or while I'm waiting for an appointment, or while I'm out walking.
The last book I read: A Boundless Place by Pamela Stockwell. A wonderful story of a quirky small-town community that teaches a widow that there's life after loss.
Pen & paper or computer: Both. I write emotional scenes by hand, because I find the slower pace helps me remember the details more clearly. then I transfer the words to my computer before I begin the later drafts of the book.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: TV or radio host, interviewing guests. Other people's lives fascinate me, because everyone has a story.
Favorite decade in fashion history: My Victorian silhouette indicates that I ought to like their clothes, but they look so uncomfortable! I like the easygoing but beautiful clothes of the 1920s and thirties, with dropped waists, slacks, and beautiful beadwork on the flapper dresses.
Place I’d most like to travel: Egypt, I think. I was there once, in my teens, but I never got to see the Valley of the Kings. I'd love to sail down the Nile from Cairo to Aswan.
My signature drink: Tea, every time! Particularly English Breakfast tea, with milk. It's what I grew up on, and cups of tea have seen me through every crisis of my life. It's the traditional British remedy for heartache and disaster!
Favorite artist: David Hockney - his more recent, impressionistic work
Number one on my bucket list: Get my first novel published, and finish my second. Those projects are in the works now.
