Author Interview - Elaine Roth
Author of The Midnight Garden
After the sudden death of her husband, Hope finds herself reeling from the loss in more ways than one. First a young wife and now a grieving widow, she feels like fodder for never-ending town gossip. But when Hope meets Will, a screenwriter back in town to run his family’s inn, she sees in him another resident oddball. And like her, Will has been navigating a loss of his own. As Hope falls for Will, she seeks out another enigma in town: Maeve, an eccentric woman who makes healing teas and communes with the dead. Some of the townspeople think she’s a grifter, a fake. Will, too, is skeptical. Hope yearns for closure and forgiveness, seeing in Maeve the chance to trust herself again―and in Will, a chance to rediscover the enchantment in the world around her… And the courage to build a bigger life than she ever thought possible.
Author I draw inspiration from:
Alice Hoffman, all her books and especially, The Dovekeepers; Taylor Jenkins Reid, Emily Henry
Favorite place to read a book:
In a perfect world -- on the beach or by the pool. Lately, I listen to audiobooks--and that's anywhere, anytime!
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:
I'd love to be stuck in an elevator with Addie LaRue of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. I LOVED that book and would love to speak with Addie who lived and saw so much and had her heart broken so many times.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
I think I was born knowing I wanted to become an author. In my earliest journal entries from elementary school, I write about how I'm going to be a published author one day.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
Hardback - I associate hardback books with books that I had to rush to get my hands on; Paperback - Who doesn't love a good paperback? Packs easily :) I'm not a huge ebook fan. If I'm reading something physical, I really love to turn a page. Audiobook - as a busy mom of two, these are my favorite. I'll listen while driving, while folding laundry, while cooking dinner - anywhere!
The last book I read:
The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros -- I'm still fangirling!
Pen & paper or computer:
I outline on paper, sometimes with an array of rainbow-colored pens. I like to revise on paper, but all my writing happens on the computer. Sometimes--on the really good writing days--my ideas come faster than I could handwrite while keeping all the ideas in my head.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with:
I think I'd be best friends with Elsie Porter from Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel, Forever Interrupted. We're both young widows, both intimately acquainted with grief, which means we'd speak the same "language"; we'd understand each other on a soul level.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:
Pilates instructor! When I'm not writing, I'm teaching Pilates and I'm lucky because it's something I love to do. Before I had kids I was a tax attorney, and that career was unfortunately not a great fit.
Favorite decade in fashion history:
As an elder millennial, I'd be a traitor to my generation to say anything other than the 90s. JNCO jeans, butterfly clips, and glitter eye shadow still make me happy.
Place I’d most like to travel:
I'd love to go to Greece. I'm very taken by the idea of the old architecture and all the history. Equally, I'd love to see the northern lights.
My signature drink:
Coffee! Every morning I have a coffee ready to go with collagen powder and cacao powder. It's almost definitely an acquired taste!
Favorite artist:
My favorite musical artist is Ed Sheeran. So many of his songs tell a story and I love that.
Number one on my bucket list:
Number one on my bucket list is to travel to Greece. But what I'm looking forward to is writing more books :)
Anything else you'd like to add:
I hope you enjoy The Midnight Garden! I so appreciate everyone who takes the time to read my book!

About Elaine Roth:
Elaine Roth is a New Jersey–based writer, parent, young widow, and comprehensively certified Pilates instructor. Her written work has appeared on Refinery29, Well+Good, Insider, HuffPost, and Scary Mommy, among others. At the tender age of fourteen, Elaine had the chance to model in YM magazine. She was paired with a seventeen-year-old male model for a photo shoot about kissing. The article was titled “Kissing A–Z,” and she was the photo underneath “O, orthodontics.” In true fourteen-year-old-girl fashion, Elaine told all her friends about her modeling debut. Months later, the issue was published. The caption accompanying the photo was “Brace yourself, metal mouth. Don’t lose your kissing cool.” Life has been throwing her curveballs ever since. She’s grateful for the chance to share her writing with others and for the chance to make a little light out of things that are often too dark.
