Author Interview - Delise Torres

Author of One Tough Cookie

A Latina Fleabag committed to her carefree single life meets the sexy new mechanic determined to break through her defenses, in this humorous and heartfelt foodie women’s fiction set at a cookie company.

Author I draw inspiration from:

I'm so inspired by the authors I've connected with through the Women's Fiction Writers Association, who have shown me how hard work, determination, and support of other writers are important skills to have if you want an author career. Some of those have become friends, like Lyn Liao Butler, Lainey Cameron, and Bradeigh Godfrey.

Favorite place to read a book:

I love reading in bed, especially after waking up.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

This didn't happen until after I moved to Germany back in 2012. I couldn't find a job in my field of food science, and I turned to journaling, which led me to writing the stories I'd had in my head for years without recognizing what they were. I had always daydreamed and saw these movies in my head with people I didn't know. It wasn't until 2014, at the age of 37, that I finally downloaded one to paper. The writing came easy and I knew I was always meant to be an author.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Ebook. After moving to Germany, I had to get rid of most of my books, so having them all in my Kindle has been a life saver. Living in Germany, it's also hard to find books in English, so buying ebooks has been the only way I've been able to stay up-to-date on the books being published right now. This has been very important as I've transitioned into becoming an author, since I have to read a lot more than I used to.

The last book I read:

Text Appeal by Amber Roberts. This is a fellow 2023 debut from my publisher, Alcove Press. It's a sex-positive, nerdy romance, about a coder who turns to sexting when she loses her job. It's being pitched as Pretty Woman meets Sex Education, which I think is the perfect description.

Pen & paper or computer:

I use mostly a computer to draft and revise my book, but sometimes, when I'm stuck, I do need to make notes on a notebook. It really helps me "see" the problem and fix it.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

Scientist. I have a PhD in Food Science and if I hadn't moved to Germany, I'd probably would still be working in my field. It took me being unemployed to finally get me to recognize my creative side, and I never want to go back.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

I've always liked 50s fashion with those full skirts and colorful prints. The women of that time were really stylish!

Place I’d most like to travel:

Italy. Growing up, I always wanted to visit Italy, especially Venice. A few years ago, I finally went and it was magical! Living in Germany, I have the advantage of not being so far away, and I hope I get to visit more Italian cities soon.

My signature drink:

I love white wine. Since moving to Germany, the Riesling has become my favorite.

Favorite artist:

There are so many, but if I have to pick just one, I'd say Taylor Swift. I love how vulnerable she is in her song lyrics. She's truly a great storyteller. It's amazing how she can convey so much emotion and backstory in such a small amount of words. That's so hard to do!

Number one on my bucket list:

I'd really like to learn to play the piano. I've always loved to sing but never had the chance to learn a musical instrument. I picture myself having dinner parties and entertaining my guests with a song and piano accompaniment, like in the old days!
