David Puretz
Author Interview - David Puretz
Author I draw inspiration from: Gotta go with Paul Auster.
Favorite place to read a book: In bed.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Jason Dessen from Dark Matter.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I wrote and illustrated a book when I was in second or third grade about an ant and a worm who were best friends but got into a big fight. Still have it in my parent’s attic. There was no turning back after that.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: All of the above. Depends on circumstance, mood, finances, etc. But if I had to pick one? Hardback wins, sadly.
The last book I read: Black Card by Chris Terry.
Pen & paper or computer: Pen and notebook for notes and observations. Story composition on the computer. The raw stuff. Then print out and get nasty with a pen and post-it notes. Update the document on the computer. Write more. Print. Get nasty again with the pen and post-its. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Kilgore Trout.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Is anyone just an author? I also teach at Yeshiva U. So, teacher. Or running a small biz supporting creative endeavors. Or bartending. Or maybe working for the National Park Service.
Favorite decade in fashion history: Early 80s! I think I still have my hammer pants, also tucked away somewhere in my parent’s attic.
Place I’d most like to travel: South America for some extended wilderness hikes. Like the Fitzroy Loop in Argentina.
My signature drink: Rye whiskey with an ice cube or two.
Favorite artist: So hard to choose just one! But if we’re talking painters, I’d probably have to go with Van Gogh.
Number one on my bucket list: Pacific Crest Trail.
Anything else you'd like to add: I used to dress like this. (And I wish I still could.)
