Author Interview - C.G. Twiles
Author of The Little Girl with a Secret: A Psychological Thriller
When city girl Syra finds her fiancé in bed with her best friend, she flees heartbreak for the lush farmland and unplugged serenity of Amish Country. There, she meets a strange little girl who roams the woods at night, singing. And a handsome caretaker who was banned from the Amish a decade ago after committing an unforgivable sin. When she finds a box of old letters buried under the porch, Syra dives into them, hoping to unravel the locals' many mysteries. What she discovers will change her life forever—and lead to an unspeakable crime.
Author I draw inspiration from:
I love lush writing such as in Priya Malhotra's A Woman of a Certain Age as well as propulsive plots, such as in Liz Alterman's The Perfect Neighborhood. Once in a blue moon, I find a book that has both, like in ASA Harrison's The Silent Wife. That's what I strive for—lyrical writing AND a speedy plot.
Favorite place to read a book:
On the sand at Coney Island.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:
Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre. He's sexy, witty, and intelligent. At first, I'd be attracted and intrigued. But as the dilemma wore on, his booming lectures and condescending mansplaining would wear on me. Eventually, he'd slip up and tell me he has a wife stuffed in his attic and I'd report him to the authorities as soon as the elevator repair guy arrived.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
After college when my dream of an acting career came to sudden and ignominious failure when I didn't even get a callback after auditioning for the same starring role in The Glass Menagerie that I'd had in college.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
Ebook only. Several years ago, I developed a macular hole in one eye. My vision is bad. I need to make the print very large, so haven't read paper books in a long time.
The last book I read:
Turning Pages by John Sargent. This was a breezy and gossipy account of his being the head of Macmillan publishing for many years.
Pen & paper or computer:
Computer. I used to write a lot of plot points out on paper but now I can keep them in my head. Once the first draft is done, I put all major plot points on index cards on the floor, and shuffle them around. I'm old school, what can I say?
Book character I think I’d be best friends with:
Scarlett O'Hara. She'd drive you crazy, but if she loves you, she'll do anything for you. If you're starving, she'll dig in the dirt for a turnip for you. But do not get on her bad side.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:
Probably a professional organizer. I've become obsessed with decluttering.
Favorite decade in fashion history:
Boomer/hippie fashion. Flair jeans, crochet crop tops, flowers in the hair. Just watch the Woodstock documentary.
Place I’d most like to travel:
Greece. It's got everything I love—ancient ruins, great food, nice people, beautiful architecture, and fabulous beaches. Only it has so many strays, so I volunteer at rescue groups when I visit. My last published thriller, The Perfect Face, takes place there.
My signature drink:
I haven't had an alcoholic drink since November. I'm curious to see how long I can go. It teaches you new ways of dealing with stress.
Favorite artist:
Charlotte Bronte for writing, Fiona Apple for music
Number one on my bucket list:
I'd love to visit Tibet. I'm also trying to get up the nerve to move from Brooklyn. I'm a bit tired of it!
Anything else you'd like to add:
Thanks for having me!
