Author Interview - Ashley Winstead
Author of The Last Housewife
One day Shay Deroy pushes play on her favorite true crime podcast and discovers her best friend from college has been found dead -- and the circumstances of her death almost exactly mirror another woman's death eight years ago...except Shay is now the only person alive who remembers that. To uncover the truth about what happened to both women and understand if their deaths are connected to a spate of missing women in their old college town, Shay goes back to investigate the threads of her friend's life. Tracing her foosteps leads Shay into increasingly secret and sinister circles, until she's forced to confront the very thing she was hoping she wouldn't: her own past and the horrible consequences she herself set in motion. The Last Housewife is a dark, brutal story of revenge that explores complicity, desire, and the complexities of power for women today.
Author I draw inspiration from: Karin Slaughter
Favorite place to read a book: In hotel beds when I'm on work travel and am shirking work to read...delicious
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Will Cowen from YOU & I, REWRITTEN by Chip Pons because at least we'd come out of it besties
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: Seven years old, pacing around my bedroom, trying to figure out how to make a sentence in a short story I was writing sound like the thing it was describing (an ocean wave). That's when I fell in love with language.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Ebook because I have a chronic pain issue that makes physical books hard to hold
The last book I read: Tomorrow and Tomorrow Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin (it's incredible)
Pen & paper or computer: Computer
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Throwing back to the elevator question: I know in my bones that Will Cowen from YOU & I, REWRITTEN by Chip Pons and I would be best friends IRL
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: Political communications director for a social justice organization (my day job before I was a full-time writer)
Favorite decade in fashion history: 2000 - 2010 for nostalgia reasons only
Place I’d most like to travel: The Amalfi coast of Italy -- and I'm going this September! Prepared to swoon
My signature drink: Red wine or dirty vodka martini depending on what kind of night it is
Favorite artist: Visual: Richard Phillips. Music: Sleigh Bells and Slothrust. This will change tomorrow!
Number one on my bucket list: The thing I want most in this life is to see every member of my family happy and healthy and thriving
