Author Interview - Annette Nauraine
Author of Do-Over Daughter: A Marriage Survivors Club Book
Frankie Carter can build anything--a house, a family, and a life without the alcoholic mother who abandoned her when she was eight. When her mother, Doralee, reappears after forty-seven years, Frankie finds herself yearning for her mother’s love and admiration. Even though Doralee breaks Frankie’s heart at every turn, indomitable Frankie fights for the love she grew up without. Frankie is elbow-deep in establishing an LGTBQ+ youth shelter in a house that holds painful memories of her childhood with Doralee. Real estate developer, Cam Simpson, demolishes her dream when he snatches the house away. Charming Cam wants to develop a relationship with Frankie, but the house will always be a barrier between them. With all her plans collapsing, Frankie is devastated to learn she will soon lose Doralee forever. Frankie’s best friends in the Marriage Survivors Club remind her all mothers—herself included, are imperfect. If Frankie can find the courage to forgive, she might be able to accept what love her mother can give before time runs out.
Author I draw inspiration from:
I love Liane Moriarty, I love the humor and quirky characters and humanity of her characters, Giuseppe di Lampedusa, All time top book, Grace Burrowes, loving, tenderness between her characters, Abraham Verghese, sprawling stories
Favorite place to read a book:
In bed
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:
Any of Liane Moriarty's characters who would end up making me laugh.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
When my kids came along, I knew I had to find some way to stay sane, so I started writing. It took me a while to realize that I WAS a writer and so could become an author.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
I dislike ebooks because I find myself looking something up on my ipad and then forgetting where I was in the book. I love to listen to audiobooks because I can listen when I'm cleaning or gardening or folding clothes.
The last book I read:
Daniel's True Desire, by Grace Burrowes. Grace's books are a balm in troubled times. She reminds you that people are kind, loving, and tender and will go to great lengths for those they love. It's nice to remember that.
Pen & paper or computer:
I write almost every morning. I spend about two hours, and I use a computer. I know some writers speak their writing into software, but I can't do that. The words somehow reside in my fingers, and typing is the best way to get the words out. Sometimes, I loosen my brain by free-writing three pages, and a lot of times, I will find a solution to a problem in a book that's been bugging me.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:
A doctor. Except I can't do math so that's a non-starter!
Favorite decade in fashion history:
Adam and Eve. No clothes except fig leaves. No judgement, no washing or ironing, no real shopping!
Place I’d most like to travel:
Barcelona. We were there once, but didn't have enough time to do much, and I'd like to return to see the Gaudi and the Park Guell.
My signature drink:
A glass (or more) of Gollywobbler Blueberry wine. Really!
Favorite artist:
I love Mozart. I used to be an opera singer, and he is so wonderful to sing. His genius shines in all his music. He was so prolific, and his heart is intimately connected in every note he writes.
Number one on my bucket list:
I'd like to go skydiving. I'm afraid of heights, but I'd love to give it a try once. I heard this morning on the radio of a 104-year-old woman who had her second jump! The first one she took at 100!
Anything else you'd like to add:
I love writing and connecting with readers and other authors. I would love to hear from any of your readers.
