Author Interview - Amber Cowie
Authors I draw inspiration from: Um, how much time do you have? Let’s start with top five. Ruth Ware for her ability to build tension. Emily Carpenter for her incredible command of setting. Tana French for her innovative structure and character development. Robyn Harding for her plot construction and ability to pull from current events without being obvious. Megan Abbott for her voice because her words stick with me for months after I finish her books.
Favorite place to read a book: 100 percent in bed before I got to sleep. If they are good, I don’t get much sleep at all, which I am cool with.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Amy and Nick Dunne from Gone Girl. Especially if I could eavesdrop on one of their arguments.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be an author. Ever. But I won a poster contest when I was five about wearing sunscreen so maybe the appreciation of my artistic that came from that was what tipped the scales.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I am not fussy, though not a huge audiobook person. I get too absorbed and end up nearly driving off the road at the scary/funny parts if I’m in a car.
The last book I read: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
Pen & paper or computer: Computer for the win. I cannot write fast enough to keep up with my ideas.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: I have always loved Kathy from Never Let Me Go. She broke my heart
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: grant writer. I spent many years working for not for profits using my words to get money for awesome projects.
Favorite decade in fashion history: My husband hates this but I LOVE the garish, bold, flashy, glitzy gritty glam of the 1970s.
Place I’d most like to travel: My daughter dreams of going to Hawaii often so I’d love to take her there.
My signature drink: Pint of my husband’s beer (preferably IPA)
Favorite artist: Guerrilla Girls + Brian Jungen + Van Gogh
Number one on my bucket list: Professionally, I would love one of my books to be optioned for a television series. Personally, surprise my daughter, son and husband with a trip to Hawaii (don’t tell them J)
