5 Books to Get You Through the Winter
Even though I grew up in the midwest and have lived my entire life in the midwest, I still haven't gotten used to the cold and I hate driving in the snow. My point is, I'm over winter. I'm counting down the days until summer...when I can take long walks with my dog, dine al fresco, and spend lazy weekends at the pool. If you're like me, you may be searching for a book that will help you get through the last few months of winter. Each of these books is set during the summer and will help you think of warmer times.

"Nick and her cousin Helena grew up in a world of sun bleached boat docks, tennis whites, and midnight gin parties at Tiger House, the family home on Martha's Vineyard." Wouldn't we all love to be hanging out on sun bleached boat docks drinking gin cocktails right now?

Let the Great World Spin is one of the first books I posted on Instagram using the hashtag #HastyBookList - the precursor to this blog. I read it right before moving from Columbia, MO to Bloomington, IN (shortly after graduating with my PhD.) "It is August 1974, and a mysterious tightrope walker is running, dancing, leaping between the towers, suspended a quarter mile above the ground." Can you imagine walking down the streets of Manhattan and seeing a man suspended between the Twin Towers? This book is considered one of the author's best works.

Need something a little lighter to read? The characters in The Vacationers are celebrating a 35th anniversary and their daughter's high school graduation at Balearic island of Mallorca. "The sunlit island, its mountains and beaches, its tapas and tennis courts, also promise an escape from the tensions simmering at home in Manhattan.." That sounds like the kind of escape I need from the sting of the bitter cold wind and slippery sidewalks. Emma Straub is known for her great beach reads, sit close to the fire and you can almost imagine you're soaking up the sun on a tropical island.

A Hasty Book List is not complete without a work of historical fiction. Did you read Room or see the movie of the same name starring Brie Larson? Frog Music is written by the same author, Emma Donoghue! "Summer of 1876: San Francisco is in the fierce grip of a record-breaking heat wave and a smallpox epidemic. Through the window of a railroad saloon, a young woman named Jenny Bonnet is shot dead." I'll take record-breaking heat over these sub-zero temps any day (without the smallpox epidemic, of course!)
