There is a little, relatively unknown corner of Hasty Book List that shares my favorite cocktail recipes. I haven’t updated it in awhile, it was something my dad and I liked to play around with when I lived in St. Louis. I should probably pick up that hobby again…it was fun! I love the variety of answers I receive on this question: everything from water to coffee to elaborate (and specific) cocktails. I did a roundup of signature drinks once before, but this is a whole new list of authors. What’s my signature drink, you ask? Morning: a cup of coffee with a splash of cream; Afternoon: Summer Berry Sparkling Water (when it is available…and it is difficult to find); Evenings: Sauvignon Blanc or this (very specific) gin and tonic, when I’m feeling fancy.

Coffee. Black. But only the good stuff, only espresso or a proper americano. Anything else just isn’t worth the time.

Carrie: Bloody Mary

Jessica: Water. I'm totally boring. I might get fancy with a sparkling water from time to time.

A cup of decaff tea during the day (with milk.) In a pub: Hendricks gin with Fevertree light tonic and cucumber slices. When you reach a certain age, you know what you like!

Writers often adopt the habits of their fictional characters and vice-a-versa. While researching and writing Off the Grid, which begins with a body discovered in an active volcanic zone, I discovered the Lava Flow Cocktail, a visually stunning concoction of rum, banana, strawberries, pineapple juice, and coconut milk. Long ago, Scotch was my cocktail-hour drink of choice, and I have often savored a Rusty Nail after dinner. Thus, it should come as no surprise to my readers that Zeke Brown, the incorruptible prosecutor in the Koa Kāne series, favors such libations. Nowadays, I turn to an elegant and buttery Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley, an American Viticulture Area in Sonoma County, California. That’s my current signature drink . . . and Nālani, Koa's girlfriend, shares my passion. I wonder why?

First thing in the morning, coffee, black. On the weekends, I love to have a bourbon Manhattan up, with a twist of orange (and no cherry). My favorite bourbon is Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, and the best red vermouth is Carpano Antica Formula. There are all sorts of exotic bitters these days, but I stick with the classic Angostura.

The only things I really drink are water and vodka. Water every day, vodka if I go out. My grandma always said that a lady drinks spirits because they’re clean.

It's a cold day here in Vermont and I'm also pining for Ireland, so I'll say a perfect hot whiskey: Irish whiskey, boiling water, sugar, and a clove-studded lemon slice. Ahhhhh.

I drank a little concoction I call Love at First Sip for all of summer 2019 when my novel Love at First Like came out. It’s vinho verde with a splash of lemon seltzer, a slice of cucumber, and a bit of basil. So refreshing.
