Lies She Told
Lies She Told by Cate Holahan
Lies She Told by Cate Holahan was my September selection from Book of the Month Club. It is actually two stories in one: Liz is a crime novelist chasing the success of her first book. She is currently working on her next novel about Beth who discovers her husband is cheating on her after recently giving birth to their daughter. As readers of Lies She Told, we get to read both Liz's real-life story and her novel.
At first I had a hard time keeping the stories straight. The whole premise of this book is that the lines are blurred between reality and fiction. Where does Liz's story end and Beth's story begin? Liz draws a lot of inspiration from real life, both intentionally and subconsciously. There are times that I had to remind myself of the differences between their stories to understand key plot twists.
In the end, I had a lot of fun figuring out what in the world was going on with Liz and her main character, Beth. There was a great mix of suspense, love affairs, and a girl just trying to make the most of her situation. Although it wasn't quite the page-turner I look for in murder mysteries, it was well-written and kept me interested in how the stories would end.
If you're a fan of murder mysteries but you're interested in exploring something that doesn't fit the typical murder mystery formula, then I think you'll really enjoy this book! I like that it wasn't too predictable and I've never read a book that essentially included two separate stories. I also enjoyed a brief insight into what it is like to be an author. I can't wait to hear what you all think of this one.
